Choosing a College to Apply To

I am very interested in political science, business, or public policy majors, as I see myself going to law or business school. However, I am not sure which major I want to pursue yet, and so I am having a hard time choosing which college I want to apply to in this section of Boston’s application. How hard is it to change your major fairly early in your freshman (or even sophomore year) while at BU, and will applying to one college greatly lessen my chances of being able to switch my major into another college??? Thanks!

It’s easy to switch/swap around if you are in CAS, ie: want to go in undeclared and end up in PolySci, etc. It is not easy if you are admitted to CAS but want to switch to one of the specialized schools, such as COM, ENG, CFA, Questrom. So personally I’d say CAS is your best bet, unless you’re really committed to business and have a really strong app, strong enough to get into Questrom. AFAIK, it’s easy enough to get out of the specialized schools and transfer to CAS, it’s just not the easiest going the other way.

what about going in as general studies? Is it possible to transfer out of general studies quickly once you know what you want to major in? @proudterrier

No! If you enter CGS you cannot transfer internally until you complete the two year CGS program.

Exactly what Tom Sr. said. CGS is a junior college–a 2-year program within BU that you must complete and THEN apply to transfer to one of BU’s main schools under a specific major. It’s not a good idea unless you have a lower GPA/test scores and feel you would benefit from a junior college (it’s like high school: you don’t choose any of your classes and you have the same classmates in everything).

I have a question, my SAT score is a 1700, GPA 3.7 and ACT is 21, what are my chances at BU

@TheUnkown123 I’d recommend starting your own chances thread, and in that thread include the specifics of your course schedule and class rigor. Those test scores are low, but at BU course rigor really matters.
