i'm applying to columbia and it says to choose teachers from academic subjects. is it okay if i ask my spanish teacher? i'm already asking my physics teacher to write a rec. is it better to choose a history/english/math teacher? thanks.

well, i guess it kinda depends on what you're planning to do.

If a math major asks for recs from his history and english teachers, it's usually not a good thing.

I'm not sure if Spanish is considered an "academic" subject since it's a foreign language course. The core curriculum/academics are-like you said- history/english/math.

I plan to be a chemistry major, and I got my recs from my AP Chem and AP Eng. Lang teachers.

foreign language is def. an academic subject

yeah thats the hardest subject (spanish) other than some of the sciences at my school

and..what does english have to do with chem? likes you said, math majors shouldnt ask hist or eng teachers, why should science majors?

English has more to do with your ability to understand the language and converse fluently. (I know it has a little more emphasis for intel students than locals.) It seems like you're applying to Columbia University: Columbia College. Does it have requirement courses, some heavy on literature?

Majoring in a science also means the potential for a research paper and research presentation. Some people who are great at the sciences usually flub up at the oral presentation of their papers.

shrug Way I see it, asking an Eng. lit teacher for a rec just shows how well you can understand the nuances and colloquisms of the English language and hopefully how well you speak it, too.
