Chose St. John's (Full Ride) Over Fordham for Finance

So I decided to choose St. John's University in NY (full ride tuition) over Fordham University (would have to pay couple thousand dollars per year). I am majoring in Finance. I am kind of regretting not choosing Fordham, knowing that it is more renowned and prestigious for its education. Will the education I get at St. John's University have a great difference in helping me land a good paying job if I decided to go with Fordham? Would Fordham be the wiser choice? I am aiming for NYU Stern as graduate school after I complete 4 years undergrad at St. Johns. So St. Johns vs. Fordham Undergrad, does it really make a difference if I went to Fordham instead?

It is tough to say, since there are pros and cons. Fordham has a better finance program overall, which is at least in the top 50, while St. John’s is not even close. However, since your tuition at St. John’s will be covered, you will be able to save almost 160-180k during your college years, which is enough to buy yourself a one bedroom apartment or to make a down payment on a house.

If you only had to pay a couple thousand dollars a year for Fordham, you should have picked the school with the stronger program.

I wouldn’t close off St. John’s that quickly. You have to look beyond the rankings and beyond the general prestige of each’s undergrad program. St. John’s “internship partner” list is pretty impressive.

Warner Music Group
Merrill Lynch
UBS
AXA Advisors
Janney Montgomery
Broadridge
Handcrafting Justice
New Line Cinema
Citigroup
MTV
Sony
Morgan Stanley
MSG
Brant Publications

Additionally, their undergrad programs contain no BS majors like international business or sports management in order to lure any student who even glances at the school, and the finance-related masters programs are pretty impressive.

Fordham is a good program, but it isn’t anything stellar; so, I don’t see why St. John’s would be an absolutely wrong choice. If nothing else, St. John’s is in lower Manhattan while Fordham is in the Bronx.

You might as well consider CUNY, Baruch College. Its Macaulay Honors program is stronger than those universities you have mentioned, and it is FREE. Though, it is a tough program with a lot of requirements.

Full ride to St. John’s? Or full tution?

Depends. Can you comfortably afford Fordham? If you can, I’d opt for Fordham, if not, then take the money at St. Johns.
