CHP Bio Major. Need Advice ASAP!

I am an incoming CHP Bio major. My course load for the first quarter is currently 21 units. Obviously, I will have a VERY busy schedule in the upcoming months. The only way I can see to lessen my course load is to drop Bio 93, which I can do because I got a 5 on my Bio AP test (taken 2 years ago). However, I am worried that doing so will affect me in the future, i.e. I may not have the background knowledge for future bio classes. Does anyone have advice regarding dropping Bio 93? Is Bio 93 crucial to my understanding of future classes? Please keep in mind that I also have the option to skip Bio 94, and that I intend to take the DAT. Thank you in advance!

Bio 93 covers the stuff in Campbell biology, which is most likely the same book you used in AP Biology (UCI makes you use the latest version but it shouldn’t be too different). I wouldn’t worry about skipping it.

Anyways, the entire class has been uploaded to Youtube so you can watch the videos if you want to:
<a href=“Bio Sci 93: DNA to Organisms. Lec. 1: Introduction - YouTube”>Bio Sci 93: DNA to Organisms. Lec. 1: Introduction - YouTube;

Of course, you might want to take it to boost your GPA, but this probably won’t work in your case since you’ll be too busy. Can you post your schedule? I don’t see why you have to take that many classes for just a bio major - I’m sure some other class can be taken later.

Thank you for your response! My current schedule is: Bio 2A (2 units), Bio 93 (4 units), Human H1AS (4 units), Human 1A (4 units), Chem H2A (4 units), and Chem H2LA (3 units)

Ouch. I forgot how intensive the honors requirements are. I guess you can try out your current schedule until the drop deadline and then make a decision on whether to keep or drop Bio 93 (I don’t know if you have to inform a counselor about this or not since you’re majoring in biological sciences - I chose not to skip it but I didn’t have as hard of a schedule). Factor in a bit higher of a workload if you choose to do this because your classes will probably get harder over time and the workload at 2 weeks into the quarter might not be perfectly indicative of the workload required at, say 7 weeks into the quarter.

In my opinion it is not necessary to take Bio 93 to do well in Bio 97-99 as those classes start from the basics anyway (at least when I took those classes), and there’s plenty of help available from Bio Sci Peer Tutoring or LARC if you’re having trouble. However, I don’t know how rigorous your AP Biology class was or how much you remember so ultimately this decision is up to you. If you decide to skip these classes and regret it later for some reason keep in mind that both Bio 93 and 94 have been uploaded in their entirety to Youtube - you don’t have to be behind your peers in knowledge.

Thank you!
