Cities with the most Michigan Alumni

Which cities do you think have the most living Michigan alumni?

NYC, Chicago, DC, Houston in that order

/ thread____

Detroit would be first

Detroit - 56,600

Northville - 28,000

Chicago - 23,232

Flint - 20,600

NYC - 13,200

I very highly doubt that.

The article mentions “Greater Detroit” which is FAR different from “Detroit.” In addition, since Northville doesn’t even have 28,000 people, I don’t see how there can be 28,000 alums there. Also, is Northville not part of “Greater Detroit?” The numbers seem deeply flawed.

And for Flint, my guess is that includes people from UM-Flint, not just Ann Arbor. 20,600 is approximately 20% of the people in Flint (not just those who are old enough to have graduated college - 20% of all people).

The figures in that article were all provided by the UM Alumni Association as well so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re only including members of the UM Alumni Association. I highly highly doubt there’s only 13,200 alums living in New York. I’d also venture to guess a vast majority of the Detroit alums are older and it’s attracting very few newer alumni.

@Vladenschlutte Agreed. Those numbers are very odd. Seems pretty nonsensical to me.

My guess is that the donation numbers would be a better indicator of where the alumni live than the alumni association numbers. The top 3 in particular sounds right about in-line with what I expect them to be at the state level.

Where the money is: Top 10 states in alumni giving in fiscal 2012

Michigan: $107.2M
California: $51.4M
New York: $33.8M
Illinois: $13.7M
New Jersey: $11.8M
Ohio: $7.3M
Florida: $6.5M
Pennsylvania: $6.8M
Washington: $5.7M
Texas: $5.2M

I think the alumni numbers are based on the various alumni clubs. There is a separate alumni club for Northville. The Northville and Detroit clubs would all serve metro Detroit which definitely has far more U-M alumni than other metro areas. If Vlad wants to get technical about urban boundaries which are irrelevant for a discussion like this then that is his problem.
