City of Hope Internship

oh man… tomorrow or end of this week… i can’t help but feel excited, which is bad because i can’t handle being sad afterwards -.- k, need to chill out ~.~

Anyone got any emails yet?

Nope I didn’t…I want to know!!

@awsciencegeek: nope, neither email nor phone call. Anyone else?

Rejected…not surprised.

Rejected. Need to find something else to do this summer … probably should have applied to more programs.

Accepted:)))

I’ve been rejected to every program I applied to so far, except I was waitlisted at SSP. I still need to hear from HSHSP, but I doubt I’ll get in.

I’m getting really ****ed. Like what’s the point of working my ass off to get a 2360 SAT and take Multi. Calc as a junior and play a varsity and club sport and a bunch of other crap if it won’t pay off?

Rejected. But I don’t care because I got into HSHSP!

@biovball: If your hard work doesn’t pay off for summer programs, it surely will for college admissions. You’ll definitely be looking at some great choices next spring.

Got it just now! Accepted.

Dang it, rejected. And yeah biovball, I’m on the same page. It sucks.

Still waiting to hear from 2 more programs, but I’m not so sure anymore if I should wait, or use this time to try contacting other research opportunities . Or even just focus on school. :confused:

Suggestions?

“The applicant pool was our largest yet and extremely competitive. We had an overwhelming response of more than 1400 applications this year and, unfortunately, we can only accept 50 students.”

That’s a 4 percent acceptance rate, and keep in mind that undergraduates also apply to this.
Still sucks, but those stats are crazy.

Scared for college even more now.

I’m so sorry for those rejected. Yall are amazing and beautiful people.

To those accepted: do you guys know if the final 50 are selected based on a first come first serve basis (based on mutual agreement)? Or will they continue to look at our applications?

Accepted! Well at least for the first part. Now to find a mentor…

rejected, not a surprise, but congrats to everyone who got in! it’s funny because i thought they select around 100 students for the second round? or perhaps they eliminated the second round this time? it’s funny o.o anyway i’m still waiting for GWC… not expecting much… gonna start emailing profs now xD at least i’m relived xDD
but yeah, good job everyone! don’t’ get discouraged if you didn’t get in, this doesn’t mean you won’t be well in the future!

@Fundamentals yes, they are given based on mutual agreement with your mentor. If you come to a mutual agreement earlier, the more likely you’ll get a spot before all of them are filled up.

Those who have found a mentor, want to start up a fb group? Anyone looking to share residence during the program?

@awscience geek

you found a mentor already?
wow thats fast

Got into 2nd round :slight_smile:

Wonder if anybody knows: do most of the internship work with an existing team project, or some sort of independent research opportunity is available, so that it’s possible to apply for siemens / STS? Thanks

@awsciencegeek: I’d be willing to share residence, but it’s tricky to find temporary housing near Duarte. Were you a student in 2012?

@lisalee8: Depends on the nature of the research group and your mentor. The project’s almost always in the context of the research group’s overall focus, and it’s often a part of a bigger project. Undergraduates and high school students w/ lab experience will probably have a bit more independence in their projects, but my understanding is that most high school students are supervised a fairly extensively.

It’ll all depend on who you’re working with, so take what I say with a grain of salt. :P

Made it to 2nd round too. :D

@shadowyams Thanks for your reply.

Is this your 2nd year? If so, do you know if any high school interns in the past year competed in Siemens / STS? (note: understand that’s not the main objective for this research experience, but certainly would be nice if possible.) Also, would you mind sharing what are the schedule / activities like? It’s a 10 week program - that’s almost a week longer than my summer. Just curious how that will work out?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks
