I know long boards are the most common on campus transportation.. but what about transportation to the other colleges, say, if you had off-campus classes? Do must people use bikes? I'm afraid to bring a bike cause when i came i saw a bike frame locked to the bike rack and the tires were stolen.. At least long boards are small enough to store in my dorm, but I don't know if long boards would get me to off campus classes in a fast time. I know freshman can't use cars, but what about mopeds or electric scooters? Are those allowed, and same questions apply to this that I had about bikes. Thanks!

On a side note.. I think someone told me this but I can't remember.. does it matter if I get a mac or pc? I'm getting a laptop for college, thinking of getting a pc tablet or something like that.. what do you guys think?

and yeah, I noticed that you have to go through hills to go to other campuses(well, i mean, coming from other campuses) which will be a pain with long boards and even bikes

People get by fine with bikes. Longboards get stolen a lot more often than bikes, it seems. The racks are usually watched pretty carefully, people know who should be around. I myself have a class at Pomona that I have 10 minutes to get to this semester, so I picked up a bike for $50 at an auction on campus. This is mostly because I’m not great with hills on my longboard; an awesome carver I am not.

The freshmen car rule has more to do with parking than any problems with them owning a car, if I remember the discussion over the issue correctly. Freshmen could have a car if they wanted, but Mudd would not grant them a student parking pass. So anything you don’t need to park is fine.

It does not matter if you get a Mac or PC, and should the curious need to have one or the other suddenly arise, you have 24 hour access to both Mac and PC labs on campus.

Bike theft isn’t a huge issue, unless you’re going to bring out your thousand-dollar road bike. If you buy a bike for less than $100, it won’t likely disappear. Most bike theft happens when people leave their bike in academics overnight, or leave their bike outside over break, or use a cheap-o lock. Then again, one guy I know saw his road bike disappear in the middle of the day, even though he had a U-lock, so it definitely happens…

On the bright side, CampSec caught two thieves and recovered a dozen bikes over Winter Break, so maybe that will help out for a while.

Way back when, I was able to walk from Mudd to Pomona within the 10 minute time slot. (Walking back up the hill within 10 minutes was a challenge, but I was able to schedule most Pomona classes either right before lunch or last class in the afternoon.) Sometimes I biked, but when you take the time to unlock / lock the bike, you might as well walk.

For transportation off Claremont Colleges, the zip car seems an interesting option. Prices are not too bad, especially several students split the cost.

I accidentally left my bike here over the break (with a U-lock) and it didn’t get stolen, so I wouldn’t be too worried about it. It wasn’t a cheap bike when I bought it 6 years ago, and it had detachable bags on the sides that weren’t stolen either. That said, I have heard of people losing their bikes even with U-locks, though I wonder if they had just attached the lock wrong and it fell off or something…(it happens, the ones from DOS will look like they are locked if you do them backwards, but if you pull on them they come right apart).

I’ve seen plenty of people longboard to the other campuses, so that’s still an option, though you need to be somewhat confident in your skills (I just got my board, and I’m still afraid to even cross Mudd campus). It really is only a 10 minute walk to most places on Pomona though, so you don’t really desperately need extra means of transportation.

As for off-campus, you can use a bike within Claremont and Upland (If the unicyclists can ride 8 miles to Donut Man, you can bike 2 miles to Vons or In & Out) and use public transportation to go any further until second semester when you feel comfortable stealing (otherwise known as politely asking for) your friend’s cars :P

Brandon, I’m not a student but wanted to buy a bike from the bike auction. Is it available to non-students? If so, do you know how I would find out when the next auction is? Thanks. Doug
