Clarification on Abbreviations

<p>As I'm new to the forum, and haven't read much about the different colleges and boarding schools (yet), I'd appreciate it if an experienced poster could just point me to a topic or give a list with the abbreviations of schools, forms, and other important things.</p>

<p>(i.e. What school is BS?)</p>

<p>Thank you,
LectorBenevole</p>

<p>I dont think there is a list of abbreviations but a few are:</p>

<p>BS = Boarding School
FA = Financial Aid
PG = Post - Graduate
10 char = 10 characters (The required amount of characters that must go in a post)
OP = Original poster (the person who started a thread)
CC = College Confidential</p>

<p>I can’t think of any more ATM.</p>

<p>Edit: ATM = at the moment</p>

<p>Ah, okay. This will clear up a lot of things, thank you!</p>

<p>bump means agreeing or kinda of moving the thread to the top of the page</p>

<p>General
URM- Underrepresented minority [can improve chances of getting in]
ORM- Over-represented minority [can decrease chances of getting in, but usually has no effect at all on the admissions process, despite what others may tell you]
s- son [this seems lazy to me as “son” is only 3 letters]
d- daughter
EC’s- extracurriculars </p>

<p>School Abbreviations
SPS- Saint Paul’s School
E/Ex/PEA- Phillips Exeter Academy
A/PA- Phillips Andover Academy
MX- Middlesex
L’ville- Lawrenceville
DA- Deerfield Academy
[please contribute anyone who thinks i’ve missed a common one]</p>

<p>Acronyms
HADES- Hotchkiss Andover Deerfield Exeter SPS
*a common acronym that IN GENERAL refers to the schools generally accepted as the most prestigious/hardest to get into. Often people simply mean a category of schools that include these schools. Many [myself included] don’t like it because it leaves out many schools that are definitely in its category and has the potential to mislead a large number of people.
GLAD CHEMMS- Groton L’ville Andover Deerfield Choate Hotchkiss Exeter Middlesex Milton SPS
*I personally prefer this acronym as it is the “top ten” schools IN GENERAL OPINION. Obviously there are plenty of great schools, these are simply the most well-known, pretigious, applied-to schools.
St. Grottlesex- SPS Groton Middlesex
*an older acronym describing what bygone generations of CC thought were the “top three” schools.</p>

<p>My understanding of St. Grottlesex is that it was meant to include ALL the saints -
St. Marks, St. Pauls, St Georges - as well as Groton and Middlesex -</p>

<p>[Saint</a> Grottlesex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Grottlesex]Saint”>Saint Grottlesex - Wikipedia)</p>

<p>GLAD CHEMMS
I agree w/ Izzy.</p>

<p>Others are:
NE=New England or North East
MA=Mid Atlantic or state Mass.</p>

<p>hahahahaha @2010</p>

<p>i think its funny you edited b/c you couldn’t think of anymore ‘atm’ and then had to edit b/c you thought of that one! :smiley: </p>
