Clarification on Housing Contract Requested

Signed DD up for Housing this morning. One thing I was not clear on when reading the information was whether we can get out of the contract (and just lose our deposit) if she should get accepted into one of the scholarship houses she is applying for. We won’t know about that until May or June, so I wanted to make sure she had a dorm if the scholarship house fell through as those are hard to get into. I don’t mind losing the $225 deposit, but I don’t want to be committed to thousands and thousands of dollars in dorm and meal plan payments I really can’t afford if she gets into the more affordable housing.

You can get all but 50$ back of the 225$ deposit.

Not necessarily. The $50 forfeiture is if you end up not attending FSU at all. Technically your contract is binding for Fall/Spring once you submit it and housing does not have to let you out of the contract. http://housing.fsu.edu/Quicklinks/Contract-Terms/Fall-2015-Spring-2016-Housing-Contract

Can you get out of the contract? Sure. I’ve done it before- that took 3 months though.

@flmom001: While there isn’t really a requirement for Housing to let your daughter out of her contract for a scholarship house, I would **think/b that they would let her out of the contract. Don’t get your hopes up though, just in case.

Do you happen to know when your daughter will find out if she was accepted into the scholarship housing?

I actually emailed the Housing department and got a surprisingly prompt response - I assumed they’d be swamped - that said they’d be happy to let her out of the contract. All we have to do is show them the acceptance letter should she get in. They even said they’d return the deposit, which I was willing to give up. We should know by the end of April. I was impressed with the quick and helpful reply!

Congrats. Make sure you save that email, just in case FSU tries to go back on their word.

The housing department has been prompt! I scanned and emailed the Spring 2015 parent form and they emailed back within two hours with the correct form attached and her contract has already been updated.

@pasbal how did you get released from your housing contract. If you don’t mind me asking?
