Hello,
Our son was accepted to FSU and as we wait for NMF status notices to come out, how should we handle the housing contracts? Apparently housing contracts open on 2/5 but we won’t know his NMF status at that time. He is wanting to stay in honors housing, do we need to submit the deposit on 2/5 or can we wait? How long can we wait, and will submitting the deposit commit him to FSU? (we will find out other acceptance/rejections in late March).
Also, what are some creative ways to fulfill/get out of this 9 hour summer requiement? Being an OOS student would really put a crimp on things (plus he doesn’t want to ‘give up’ one of his summers ) I read somewhere that study abroad might count but I can’t seem to find which programs would qualify and how much they cost.
Thank you guys for your help! This has been a really great resource through this whole process.

We waited until he was sure before we paid the housing deposit. Traditionally, any honors student who wanted to live in the honors dorm was able to do so even with a high housing number. I don’t think they will promise that, but that is how it works out. Don’t sweat the summer requirement. They are flexible and it is waived routinely for reasons like living OOS and can’t return for the summer. It is my understanding a summer abroad program will qualify, esp if an FSU program.
We were at FSU last weekend, and the housing director really stressed the fact that they don’t have enough housing for all the incoming freshman. The housing deposit is $225, and $175 of it is refundable if you notify them that your son is not attending by May 1st. It might be worth it just to submit the deposit if you think there’s any chance he might go there.
Thanks @vistajay , great information…
@Trombonemama I’ve thought the same thing, but we actually have twins (I actually think UF might be better for my daughter because she has an interest in animal science), but to cover our bases that would be 2 housing deposits… ouch! They would definitely want to be part of the honors program but there are 2 factors, we don’t know for sure their NMF status (I’m confident they will make it though) and they haven’t even turned in their honors apps yet. I may call the honors program there today to see if it’s appropriate to put the deposit in for honors housing even if they aren’t technically part of the program yet (but it does say NMF are auto-admits to honors)… so confusing!
@7thgenTX You’re correct in that NMF are auto-admitted to honors, but I would call, as usually those students are notified in their acceptances and obviously that doesn’t apply since you can’t be sure of their status yet. Also, you won’t put a deposit down for honors housing specifically, just general housing. Actual room and building selection is open from Feb 19-Mar 25.
@marsillygoat thanks… that helps to know it’s just reserving a general spot vs. a specific one.
@7thgenTX so sorry just double checked! roommate selection is feb 19-mar 25. When you open a contract this week, you get a random number that determines your priority for choosing a building and room. They assign you a specific time to choose your room preference based off that priority number. I triple checked with admissions, who told me that room selection doesn’t happen until after honors decisions are released, so you’ll still definitely know in time, I just don’t want to give you the wrong info!
Thanks @marsillygoat , I just paid the deposits and indeed it is just for a ‘place in line’ number… they didn’t ask about housing preferences or anything specific.
