Clarifying Kresge

I've been seeing a lot of posts in which Kresge is generalized, stereotyped and otherwise dismissed as a "hippy" college. For any incoming freshman, I want to give you guys a little more context.

I was a freshman at Kresge college this past year. The apartments are great, with almost all buildings renovated (building 8 is the last, and will be re-done this summer). My double was huge- dorm rooms, on the other hand, are way cramped. Plenty of room for entertainment, with a living room and pretty nice kitchen. You don't have to cook your food, however. There are ten residential colleges and five dining halls- Kresge shares a dining hall with Porter, which is only a 2 minute walk away. And all other dining halls are 10 to 15 minutes away.

In terms of Kresge residents, I roomed with people from all over California, from different socio-economic backgrounds, and even a few people from across the country. There were graffiti artists, skateboarders, surfers, "preppy" types, photographers, athletes... I would never have called Kresge a hippy college, though there is plenty of peace and love to spare- I've never had so many friends in my life.

Kresge is a great community, and if you can handle having 6 roommates (just really have concrete rules about cleaning!), love being surrounded by good friends and maybe a little herb (come on, it's santa cruz, marijuana is everywhere) come to Kresge.

By the way, there is absolutely NO pressure to smoke or drink...I don't smoke, along with a lot of other people, and we never felt overwhelmed or like people were shoving it in our faces.
