Students at Kresge (or past students): How true are the Kresge College stereotypes?

I have been affiliated with kresge college, which originally appealed to me because the apartment style living (with kitchen!) and its location (close to science hall). However, when I applied for housing, I was not aware of the stereotype that there is a prevalent drug scene there, and its known as the "hippy" college for that reason.

I just wanted to know how prevalent the drug scene was there. Is it avoidable? I have no problem with people who are into that, I just don't want it to be something that distracts me from my studies or living comfortably.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes their time to reply to me! :)

Ignore stereotypes. They will only give you a headache if you try to follow them and most people who believe them will jump on anything they think proves their point of view and will scoff at anything that disproves it as just an exception to a rule.

Kresge does have a few more hills to traverse than some of the other colleges. But I definitely loved my sister college (Porter affiliate myself; graduated, though).

You’ll love Kresge I think :)

I lived at Kresge my freshmen year. Definitely ignore the stereotypes. I am a total science nerd, and i lived happily in Kresge :). I was extremely happy to have a kitchen and not to have to rely on the dining halls for food. Also, Kresge has the Owl’s Nest, but after a while it gets just as tiring to go eat there as is did to go to the dining halls.

I’m not into drugs at all and I hardly drink. After two years at UCSC, I’m super comfortable there because even though i do see people drinking and doing drugs, it doesn’t necessarily affect me. It’s easy to stay away from that stuff. You’ll find plenty of people with the same mindset :)

Thank you guys so much for the advice, these posts were very helpful. Im super excited to move in and get acclimated!

hey can you guys please tell me your GPA ans SAT scores you had when you applied to UCSC? thanks!
