Clark Kerr

How far is Clark Kerr to the main campus and what is its reputation and Berkeley?

It is about a 10 minute walk to the upper (southeast) edge of campus (location of the law school); it was formerly a school for the deaf -- Spanish style buildings with courtyards, low-rise; windows that open, large rooms, attractive cafeteria; there is a running field with views of the bay a short walk from the dorms. Students I've spoken to seem to prefer the "halls" to the "suites" -- easier to make friends, less isolated. It is fairly close to College Avenue, which has some nice restaurants, a movie theater, and other amenities, and to the Domingo shopping area near the Claremont Hotel. I thought it was a lot nicer than the "units" but I am a parent...some students initially complain that it is "far" -- until they move into apartments which are at least as far away!

From what I saw when my son was there, CK is an easygoing, friendly dorm to live in. Not THAT far from the main campus. Bigger rooms than Unit 2 (haven't seen the others) and the students seemed to like it.

Yeah about 10 min. from campus and a bus right outside that will take you there too. Really nice dining room. I heard atheletes live there so they get the best food. . . . Also a better chance of getting PARKING first year. I personally liked the suites better than the dorms because the suites had a lot more light (I'm not into dark corridors and rooms). I have a friend who was in CK and she LOVED it.

Those I know at Clark Kerr generally seem to enjoy it, although personally I'd put it behind the units and right in front of Foothill and Stern/Bowles in terms of appeal. It's quite a bit of a walk from campus which is okay if you don't mind walking, but for many it's a bit of a hassle. The main perk is that the rooms are pretty huge compared to the units, but I think its weaker social atmosphere (from what I've seen) and poor location, as well as lackluster outward appearance, doesn't make up for it. The food used to be the best but now, I'd probably take Cafe 3 (for taste) and Crossroads (for selection) over it.

One thing to consider: Clerk Kerr dorms are the most expensive dorms in the country.

^Thats def not true. Your just assuming that because Berkeley has the most expensive dorms in the U.S. and Clark Kerr is the most expensive dorm at Berkeley, then Clark Kerr is the most expensive dorm in the country. That's some flawed reasoning.

Im sure there are many dorms at various colleges that are more expensive.

I have a lot of friends at Clark Kerr last year, some loved it there and some didn't. The walk is not a big deal and I don't know how well used the shuttle service is. I think the units are preferred for the atmosphere (at least for 1st year.) I ate at Clark Kerr many times and felt the food was very over rated. Crossroads and Unit 3 are just as good or better IMO. The rooms I've seen at CK are bigger than standard Unit rooms.
