At my school, a ton of people bombed the first assignment in AP World which was the summer assignment, and it was based on some readings we had to do and whatnot. It was a test grade. People got 25’s and 30’s, so like, really, really low F’s. They were “failing” for a few weeks but brought it back up through homework/tests/quizzes/etc - I doubt your teacher will allow the entire class to end up with a D or lower in the class.

Ah, you sound like the typical top of his/her class smart kid who’s used to barely trying. APUSH is not a joke, it’s generally one of the hardest classes (and AP exams) out there. My teacher just gave us a 20 minute talk the other day about how our grades were great for the most part right now because we hadn’t had a test yet and that we should expect for them to go down - a lot. She also said that they’d possibly, depending on our work ethic and abilities, go up again when we start understanding the material and process better, around the end of the 1st semester.

Frankly, I’m not having any issues with coping with these future possible low grades in APUSH because I took AP World last year and the same thing happened (either your teacher wasn’t as hard as mine or you’re a sheer genius at world history). Pretty much everyone in the class got terrible grades on the major tests and yes, people did get As. Same for last year’s APUSH class; I know people who got great grades in the class.

Tl;dr Be humble and realize that it’s a tough class and realize you aren’t as smart as you thought you were. APUSH is tough. Embrace it.

We’re almost in the same boat. I got a 34/41 on my first physics quiz today. Great stuff. I’m taking it at the same time as chem and algebra 2 so that probably wasn’t the best idea. You still have time to raise the grade and if the teacher expected that grade then don’t worry. Just work hard and study if it doesn’t work out you did the best you could.

Yeah I realize I am very panicky but this is a huge disappointment for me. I was confident I would get a good score from spending so much time on the readings and taking quality notes. I also did practice tests online but the questions my teacher did were more “subjective” questions like if the puritans and separatists moved to America to practice their faith which is true but the answer was completely different on the test

@ CE527M - No I am not the typical smart kid and I work hard because my parents moved to America for a better life. I learned English through ESL and always put into remedial classes because I couldn’t speak a lick of English in elementary since my parents speak Chinese at home. I stay up late averaging 3~4 hours of sleep to get good grades. I really am not smart!!!

I was more interested in AP World because of my heritage and I knew some of these things before taking the course especially with religion.

Yeah I know I have to be humble but through hard work I believed I could do well and get a good grade but now I just have to work even harder! Though I feel like I disapointed my parents alot >< Im strictly motivated to do well for a better life for me and my parents~

Do you think this grade makes me unqualified for scholarships? I am so sad in myself. I believe getting good grade will help me get scholarships and now I feel like this hurt my chances alot

Well that explains part of it. Sorry for sounding like a jerk.

Obviously you’re smart if you did average on an AP test. Unless you have a really bad teacher who isn’t challenging the class with the tests, then it’s expected that you’ll get bad grades on the tests, at least in the beginning. And considering the whole point of this thread, sounds like the tests are definitely hard!

AP World is more about themes; in APUSH you need to know a ton of actual fact (dates, people, events, the whole deal).

Hard work does equal good grades. You just need to keep working hard and you’ll start getting used to the class and the format. Like I said, AP World and APUSH are a little different from each other, and myself and the other AP World kids who are now taking APUSH are struggling just as much as the others because it’s different than what we were used to. You’ve had one tests. ONE. This doesn’t mean you’ll get a D for the semester/year. Just keep working hard, and stay for tutoring if your teacher offers it. Ask your teacher what s/he thinks you need to work on. And what you lack in test grades make up with high grades in other activities.

It’s one test - you’ll have a whole lot more before the semester is over. The first test is always hard since you don’t know what to expect. Now that you know what type of questions your teacher asks, whether general concepts/specific facts are more important, etc etc you’ll be able to prepare more efficiently for future tests and get a better score. And then your grade will go up. Not to mention 100’s on homework will help bring it up. It’ll all be okay, just give it time.

Don’t freak out or stress out over one test, I mean you are going to take more, so there is time for your grade to improve. I was in the same boat as you were in a few weeks ago. On my first APUSH test, I had a D-, and everyone else failed it, barely anyone had a B (Which was the highest score out of my teachers 4 APUSH classes). If you did had a B or higher, it was most likely that you were in the top5. As i took more and more tests, my grade slowly improved, and im only half way into the quarter. Right now I currently have a B, which is the my worst grade out of my 7 classes. But dude, just chill don’t stress, all you have to do is do better on the other tests. Then that’s when you will see your grade improve.
