Class of 2012 admissions already underway

a philadelphia-area newspaper reports today on a senior field hockey star who has "revealed ... that she will be attending prestigious princeton university next season." presumably, she applied and received a likely letter from admissions, and is not just announcing it as her first choice. under early decision, recruited athletes were routinely admitted in the fall months. indeed, the system was set up to give athletes early decisions when "squeezed" by a time-limited scholarship offer to another school. this year is different, however, with the abolition of early admissions. theoretically, even athletes will not receive their final, formal offers of admission until may 1, but the suspicion has been that at harvard and princeton, top recruits from all endeavors (athletic, academic, and extracurricular) will be notified of their likelihood of admission almost on a rolling basis. perhaps tellingly, the university "encourages" all applicants to submit their application materials by december 15, not january 1 (the official deadline). this bears watching.

Read this article. I thought under Ivy League Rules, Llkely letters could not be issued before October 1? Moreover, my understanding is that they are for recruited athletes only. A verbal from a coach is technically not an offer of admission......
