Class of 2012: Where are you applying to?

So tylrrvera, are you interested in any programs at these colleges specifically or did you just decide that you’d apply to the whole top 20 list? That list is massive, and would cost some big bucks, like $2000 just to apply!

^^^^Yes I know the list is huge, but tentative, and I will certainly cut it down by fall.

^I am in fact. I hope to major in PoliSci/Government/Pre-Law and most if not all of the schools listed have renowned programs in these fields. I do understand that it will cost A LOT to apply, which is why i have a job and am saving up/ plan on cutting it down to around 14.

As of now:
CalTech
Columbia
Stanford
UCBerkley
UCSD
UCLA
HarveyMudd

My list seems so short compared to most of these!

University of Puget Sound ED

In order of interest:
Emerson College
University of Chicago
NYU
Miami University (backup)
Ohio State University (backup)

^ you and I are applying to the same number of schools :)

lol my Chem teacher went to University of Puget Sound.

Stanford
Duke
Harvey Mudd
Cooper Union
Wellesley
MIT
Rice
Rensselaer Polytechnic
(I would just count all the Ivy Leagues as one college. But they’re not. So here goes…I don’t actually plan on applying to all of them-cause that would be ridiculous in both time and application fees. But it would be nice to get into an Ivy.)
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Cornell
UPenn
Dartmouth
Columbia
Brown

AND-What is SCEA? I feel like I should know what it is…

SCEA: single choice early action. Yale, Princeton, and Harvard will practice it starting this fall

Don’t apply to a school just for the name…

Stanford has SCEA too

LSU !
Louisiana State University
Tigers, Grrrr !!

Definitely Applying:
UCLA
USC
UC Berkeley
UC Irvine<3
UCSD
Harvard

Through Questbridge (Free)
Columbia (#1)
Stanford
Yale
UPenn
Northwestern
UChicago

I just want to go to Columbia, I don’t care for anything else really.

University of Chicago

that’s all I can think of so far, haha. cause it’s my #1.

Yale (probably SCEA)
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
Dartmouth
Harvard
Columbia
Duke
U Chicago
UC’s (Berkeley, LA, Davis)
U Michigan
U Washington

Is applying to 17 schools overkill? Seems like it to me. One reason why I am considering not applying to any UC’s

Ten years ago, yes. Nowadays, not so much. The CommonApp and other conveniences (i.e. QuestBridge) are making it easier and even cheaper to apply to more schools than it used to be.

Applying to 10-20 schools is a rather common occurrence now, whereas ten years ago applying to 5-10 was a bit on the high side.

I, for example, applied to 15 schools, though I only had to pay four application fees and write seven individual supplements, I believe.

Well I am technically eligible for the fee waiver. But I am more worried about the personal statements and stuff like that.

Look at your colleges on the CommonApp and see how many of them require supplemental essays.

If all 17 use the CommonApp, then you can/will use one essay for your Personal Statement, which goes to all of them. In addition, several of these colleges might ask you to write extra essays in their supplement.

Only 8 out of my 17 uses common apps, and most of them require supplements
4 are UC’s so they have their own UC admission system (One app for the whole system)
Cal Poly’s use CSU mentor system, which I believe is the same as the UC system (1 app)
Rest are independent.

Do I have to use the same essay for all my colleges?

I have tailored each essay (I ahve about 3 essays total) for about 3 or 4 schools.

I assume you have to use the same essay, because the common apps said not to specialize for each school, that is what the supplements are for.
