“It is very important to Miami that you file a FASFA”

-Yes, urge your parents to submit FASFA. Miami awards Merit scholarships. We have submitted every year. We are very far from being eligible to any need based. D’s full tuition+ was covered by Merit awards. The deadline is Feb. 15, do not miss it.

-Another point, for those who will maintain high college GPA (used to be 3.8+), there are substantial Merit awards for returning students. They are NOT automatic, you have to apply. The deadline used to be March 15, but you can do it earliest when you are Miami freshman.

I have a question about filing FAFSA for purely merit awards. I called the FA Office a few days ago, told them that with the EFC we calculated there was no way SS would qualify for any need-based aid, and asked if we needed to file FAFSA. The woman I spoke to said no. MiamiDAP, are you saying that your daughter qualified for more merit because she submitted the FAFSA? He already received notification that he has received one of the “automatic” merit awards.

Suzy - that is interesting. My DS is now a sophomore - we were told we had to file a FAFSA to receive the automatic merit scholarship even though we have a 99,999 EFC. I filed again last year since I had the previous year. I will need to call and confirm what you were told, it would be nice not to have to file.

As far as the “extra” scholarships MiamiDAP is talking about, I looked at the website since my DS’s GPA is over 3.8 and has been Dean’s List or President’s List every semester. I found information about “departmental” scholarships for returning students - however, not every department was listed. My DS is at Farmer, and of course the B-school is not listed.

"MiamiDAP, are you saying that your daughter qualified for more merit because she submitted the FAFSA? "
-I believe, yes. We actually received letter from Miami stating that to qualify for full range of Merit scholarships, we are strongly advised to file FASFA. FASFA does not take much time, we have filed every year with awesome results. D. got close to 10 Merit awards that covered her full tuition+. In addtion, starting with March of freshman year, D. applied for Returning student Merit awards. They are not automatic, studennts with good academic standing (college GPA 3.8+) can apply every eyear by March 15. Additional rewards were also substantial.
Departmental Merit awards are normally allocated to seniors and a bit for juniors. They are usually automatic or student might be notified by department to apply. As far as I remember. I believe that D. had some in her senior year, although her department is arguably one of the most competitive because of good number of pre-meds, who have to maintain very high college GPA to apply to Med. School. As far as I know, Summa Cum Laude cut off was incredibly high in D’s major, much higher than in other majors.
These could hyave all changed. D. has graduated last May. However, as FASFA definitely does not hurt anything, I still strongly advise to file. We are still doing it every year, just in case, although we are paying full price for D’s Med. School.
We are very far from qualifying for any need based. Not only because of income but also because of no debt and no other dependents.

Thank you ChicagoBear and MiamiDAP. We are going to go ahead and file it. groan

By the way, I always get a little nervous relying on one person’s word even if they are working for the school and should know. I think in this case it’s better safe than sorry.
