Class of 2018 move in day

I can't believe move in day for S is like 42 days away. Out of staters move in on 8/18 at Otterbein, orientation is the 19th. The first week is referred to as "First Flight", classes officially begin on the 25th. S was cast in the fall musical from his college audition. Otterbein is doing Sweet Charity in the fall. S loves this musical he is beyond excited, he'll be doing a lot of dancing...I'm not sure if he has any lines he has several names LOL. Stella Kane, head of dance at O'bein is choreographing. Stella danced with Fosse, S is so thrilled to be working with her. So rehearsals start for him the 25th as well..nothing like total immersion right off the bat.

I'm not sure how many of "us" who auditioned are still on here but..when is everyone else moving in? Whats planned for the first week?

My daughter moves in on Aug 29th and classes begin right after Labor Day. Auditions for fall performances begin that week too! She just got her schedule and is so excited. Me on the other hand….

We have freshman move-in on Aug 20th followed by freshman orientation on the 21st and 22nd. Regular classes begin that following Monday.

BW Move in is 8/21 - followed by a bunch of Welcome activities (Orientation was separate and earlier… although D doesn’t go to that until 8/1 & 2) I believe auditions for the Fall Musical happen very shortly following move-in.

My daughter moves in on Aug 17th with Freshman activities for a full week prior to the start of school on the 25th.

D moves in 8/24 and the 1st week at NYU is “Welcome Week” for freshmen -with orientation activities thrown in. Classes start Tues after Labor day. She gets her dorm/roommate assignment this week (NYU doesn’t allow Freshmen to choose roommates- it’s “randomized”) so that will be the main excitement of the week!

That is exciting! S gets his the end of the month, he did roommate roulette. He talks to the other MT/Dance guy quite a bit but they figured they would be together constantly so they didn’t wanna room together.

Move in day is August 19th. From what was said at orientation, welcome week seems jam packed. Auditions for the fall show are the second day of welcome week, I believe. Classes start the 25th. We already started dorm room shopping, but can probably finish up once the dorm assignment comes in the end of this week. Roommate roulette here too. I think The D said that she requested a conservatory roommate, but not an MT major! Same reason your kiddo gave, too danged much togetherness!!!

My daughter is rooming with another CC mom’s daughter  Thanks CC!

@bisouu awesome!

WSU move-in is 8/21. Auditions for voice and dance placement on 8/22. Auditions for fall productions took place in spring semester. Auditions for winter/spring productions will be in November. S met his roommate in person at June orientation. More than half the MT class “conspired” to go to orientation on the same day and Managing Director of Theatre Dept. was kind enough to have a list with roommate assignments so several of them got to “bond” over the course of the day. WSU Managing Director is a GEM and does a lot to personalize the whole transition experience.

During campus-wide freshman orientation it was amazing that the MTs found each other almost instantaneously. They are so OBVIOUSLY different from the rest of the student body in their posture and behavior - talking animatedly, not hesitant to speak up, “dancing” around - I knew my S had found “home”. Several of them recognized each other from the “audition trail”, summer intensives, etc. They looked like a bunch of puppies, litter mates who knew each other by “smell”. Even if these kids choose to follow other paths over time, what this process and their intense preparation for it has given them can never be taken away. We can be proud of ALL of them. I will miss my S come fall, but I am so happy for him and his new “litter mates” (I’m sure the “dog fights” will surface when the honeymoon is over, but they’ll have to work that out, too.)

Great story mom4bway!

We (son and several family members) fly to Glasgow 2 months from today! We’re staying 8 nights total (rented a flat) and are getting there a week early to do 2-3 days of sight-seeing, in addition to setting up dorm room (have to buy almost everything there), bank account, mobile phone account, and registering with a GP and Pharmacist (health insurance and prescriptions are free for students). We have lots to do before-hand (Visa application, which is in the works), and lots to do when we get there…but we’re all excited!!!

At RCS, there’s a week of orientation-type sessions, placement classes, and then everything starts in earnest. We’ll only be there for 1 day of orientation…S will be ready for us to go by then, I’m sure. (I doubt I’ll be ready to leave… already warned family members that I’ll potentially be a mess getting on that plane home.)

“Freshers” do not audition/participate in any shows their first year. I think it’s a good thing-- Being an international student, my son will have a huge learning/cultural curve…that might take a while. RCS has a “Freshers Friend” program (optional) that my son signed up for-- An upperclassman will be in touch with him in a few weeks, and that person will be available for all types of questions/advice about RCS, and Glasgow in general. Luckily, in this age of social media, my son has already been in touch with many of his MT classmates. It’s very exciting-- they are, truly, from all around the world.

He’ll live in a privately-owned dorm where most of the other students also go to RCS. He’ll have his own room and bathroom and will share a kitchen/dining/living space with 8 other students. There is no meal plan and he’ll have to cook his own food. (THIS is actually the thing that worries me the most…) He’ll have a 10-15 minute walk to school through the heart of Glasgow city center. I’m sure the kids will find themselves walking to school in groups. There is an underground subway system and a bike rental/exchange program with many bike stations throughout the city.

Hubby has been taking care of the financials, and so-far, so-good on that front. (He watches the exchange rate every day.) The offices at RCS are great about giving out required information and answer emails in a timely manner. Son is working hard this summer to make as much money as he can-- We told him that we’re not “funding fun.” He seems OK with that, and it’s reasonable to ask as a parent. Wish us luck!

SU88FA - What a wonderful adventure you and son are about to embark on! He will be a man of the world :)

Gosh, I’m feeling overwhelmed getting everything together and the kiddo is going a whopping 260 miles or so away. I can’t imagine having to plan a move to a college in another country!!! It’s all very exciting no matter the distance, though!

Yea what GSOMT says now I feel like a big wuss and I only have a 3 hr drive LOL

My D ended up with a suite of 4 girls, none of whom live in driving distance to NYC. (we are 8 hours away ourselves, but plan to drive August/May) so she is going to be in charge of several “bulky” items like the microwave (the good news is we have had one waiting for her in the basement for a year)

We are flying, though we could have made the 13 hour drive. We decided to fly to reduce crankiness/stress related outbursts (mine!!). I’m a habitual over-packer, so the limited packing space will be a good thing. I have started piles of the essentials in the living room, which I’m sure will be pared down when we get to zero hour.

“habitual over-packer” HA!!! I have the same problem. I know she’ll have far too much, but I operate on the “better to have too much than not enough” theory!

We did the 12 hour drive last year in august and may and plan on it again. My D while she decided to take less this year still would have too much to take on a plane. That way she can take all 4 seasons clothes and it works out cheaper than flying for us. She likes to decorate her room to and that way we can take that stuff for her. We did a storage unit for the summer and plan too next year as well
