Reflection
Strengths: scores above middle 50 percentile, lots of leadership, good recs, awesome supplemental essays
Weaknesses: admissions officers could probably tell I wouldn’t end up going
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: waitlisting allows a college to gauge a student’s investment in the school. it’s due the same day as Decision Day (May 1st) so students using Scripps as a safety would only fill it out if they didn’t get in to their other schools. That way the school can protect yield.
General Comments: Scripps was one of my favorite safeties but oh well. got in to UCLA today!

Decision: Accepted!!

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2210 (800 M, 630 CR, 780 W 10 essay but didn’t send)
ACT: 35 (36 English, 35 everything else, 10 essay)
SAT II: didn’t send
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 96 average, but school only sends weighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 12%, didn’t send
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP English III (4), Human Geo (5), Calc AB (5), didn’t send physics B
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP English IV, AP Government, AP Econ, AP Bio, AP Psych, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, PALS, litmag, dance
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): no major awards, but multiple Spanish awards and things such as AP Scholar, NM Commended,

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Theater (stage manager, assistant costumer), Amigos de las Americas (assistant training director of my chapter, board member, volunteer), mentoring group at my school (vice president), (not putting for privacy) Rollergirls (photographer), Humane Society (Cat and sick cat volunteer), NHS, another volunteer organization through my school, peer math tutor, peer English tutor, PALS, Model UN, and I think that’s it?
Job/Work Experience: none until January 2014
Volunteer/Community service: see extracurriculars, everything but theater, the mentoring group, and model UN is a volunteer organization.
Summer Activities: community college classes and Amigos de las Americas
Essays: commonapp was really good (at least my English teacher and college counselor though so), My supplement was pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. I wrote it about growing up in roller derby and having such a female-dominated sport in my family and life.
Teacher Recommendation: I think good?
Counselor Rec: extremely good
Additional Rec: also extremely good, written by a designer/rollergirl about my professionalism and work with the marketing team.
Interview: Went really well, though I did show up almost late and completely sweaty. Traffic sucks in Austin, especially when your car has no A/C. I also went and talked to her the next day when she visited my school.

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): Texas
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: magnet, extremely rigorous and nationally ranked
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: ~50,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection:
Strengths: academics, ECs/leadership, tbh my application was pretty good for Scripps. But Scripps is need blind, and every other school I’ve gotten financial aid from has given me about a $37,000 grant for need. (Scripps will be less, since I received the James E. Scripps scholarship.)
Weaknesses: Probably my summer activities except for last year, when I went abroad for 7 weeks volunteering. My teacher recs (or at least the one I was able to read) seemed to not be as good as my counselor or outside rec.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: As bad as this will sound, I was pretty confident that I would be accepted. My interview went really well, and the admissions counselor seemed impressed. I was also accepted to Smith ED (even though I couldn’t afford it), so I was aware that I was on the radar for selective women’s colleges. I emphasized both Amigos and my love of volunteering and my involvement in roller derby.
General Comments: Congrats to everyone who got in! I’m not sure I’ll be able to attend just due to money (damn divorced parents in the issue that come with that), but I’m still happy for it to be a possibility!
