Class of 2020 ED Discussion Thread!

@ravenclaws Interesting news. I’d be surprised if decisions were released this week. Does anyone know if Pomona notifies applicants of the ED1 release day in advance?

@golfcashoahu In the past, they post a picture of like envelopes the day they’re releasing decisions on the portal I think? Also, the associate dean of admissions usually tweet the day they’re released.

^^^guess I need to make a Twitter

Hey everyone, I’m applying ED to Pomona and I’m super excited!

Basic stats:

GPA 3.90 unweighted, 4.61 weighted
ACT 34
Lots of volunteering and community service, play 2 sports

When I found this online i got really excited because a lot of people at my school just don’t know about Pomona (even though I live in southern California…)

Just thought i might add, as one of the admissions counselors told me, they begin the EDI application review committee on December 8th… so there’s no way we’re getting results this week. Hopefully next Friday though!

PS if we all get in we should meet up like during the first week of school!

@cameronlol Oooh really? I heard from them tat they only start looking at applications at the end of November so that makes sense! That means we’ll probably get the results around December 11th possibly? They’ve released it around the 12th every year but that’s a Saturday this year.

Hi, when the time comes to check decisions do we go to the portal that we have checked our application status at? if any of you know:)

hahaha the pomona associate dean of admissions tweeted about our thread :-/ guess we should be more patient!

@surf2016 Hmm I think decisions usually come out around 5-6 pm? Just a guess though! And we’re thinking it’ll be around the 11th this year.

@surf2016 I believe it’s at 5 pm, at least it was for regular decisions last year…

and @ravenclaws I see you changed your profile pic. Who needs Columbia? :stuck_out_tongue:

But like seriously I think all of us on this thread are qualified and determined enough to get in. My friend runs a 4:44 mile and is trying to get in ED for running, and I told him to join the thread too

Last year, it looks like Pomona released the decisions at around 5PM on 12/12. It’s cool that the Associate Dean of Admissions tweeted about the thread. Hopefully, we can all get acceptance letters on 12/15––or better yet, on 12/11.

I got so excited today, I was reading about Pomona rules and regulations, and apparently you’re allowed to have a pet in your dorm!!! It has to be a caged animal, but that includes bunnies and I’m freaking out because the last time I had a bunny we had to give it away because my sister gave it lice and that left me emotionally traumatized (I was like 6 or 7 years old). I’m gonna name him Cecil (after the mascot plus Cara Delevingne named her bunny Cecil) and I really don’t know why I’m going on about this since probably none of you care but I JUST GOT REALLY EXCITED AND JUST WANTED TO SHARE!

Wow @cameronlol that’s actually so exciting haha. But I just wish they would also let us bring cats! Going to miss my kitties a lot when I leave for college…

@ravenclaw ok thank you. so we will just sign in to the portal?

What did you guys end up writing your supplements on? I did the make up your own course, and I came up with a class that focused around mistranslations in history - specifically what they were, what caused them (scribe messed up a letter or two, cultural misunderstanding, etc.), and their impact.

One example I used was the unconditional surrender sent to Japan at the end of WW2 in 1945. When reporters asked the Japanese Prime Minister Suzuki about it, he said “mokusatsu,” which can mean to either remain silent or treat with silent contempt. He intended that he and his cabinet hadn’t decided what to do, and so they were ‘staying silent,’ but the US assumed that he referred to the more negative meaning, and as a result dropped the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Anyways, thought you guys (and girls) would find that interesting.

@surf2016 Yep this is the link to the portal: https://admissions.pomona.edu/apply/status

@cameronlol Haha yes!! I totally forgot it was a random picture of Columbia (it used to be my dream school back when I was in 10th grade) and I thought it probably wasn’t appropriate for an ED applicant to not Columbia haha. And omg a bunny would be so exciting!! Cecil is actually the cutest mascot ever though:)

@Comrod33 Oooh that sounds like a really interesting and unique essay! I also did mine kinda about history, like how fear of something guides policies. So NSA/TSA/PATRIOT Act is the policy result of 9/11 terrorism. I’m not sure if that explanation made sense lol.

I chose the design your own course prompt. Mine might’ve been a bit cliché, but it was a course entitled “Gender and Education in the Arab World” (partially because I’m a die-hard feminist, partially because I’m currently reading Malala’s autobiography, and partially because my mom’s family is from Iran and she grew up with my grandpa telling her not to go to school).

And also, since we’re all here and countdown-ing (POTENTIALLY ONLY 9 DAYS LEFT UNTIL DECISION DAY OMGGG) why not share our interests and potential majors? I’ve been a bit wishy-washy, but now I’m thinking Bio major then going to med school (ideally I’ll be an Ob Gyn). My passion is English, so that’s what I declared on my application… good thing you can change your major until sophomore year!

And plus if we get the sense of what each others’ prospective majors and minors are, we can probably determine if we’ll have any classes together! (I’m getting waaaaaay too into this :stuck_out_tongue: )

@cameronlol I’m thinking of maybe double majoring in political science and computer science. I’m not completely sure though! I was thinking that I would go into law after undergrad, but I’ll probably end up changing my mind when I go to college. I’m also interested in participating in mock trial, some political club, mental health/lgbtq club, and some sport?

And same, I keep thinking about what I would want to do in Pomona. I’m trying not to get my hopes up just in case, but it’s hard not to think about it!!

@ravenclaws Haha, same! I basically have the next 4 years planned out, but that 9.76% acceptance rate might pose a problem…

And yeah I was reading about the QRC and other resources Pomona has to offer and I got, again, REALLY EXCITED! Plus I’ve basically gone through every rabbit breed known to man and decided on the Holland Lop bunny (they’re so freaking cute!!!)

And I’m not so sure how I feel about that PE requirement… I guess I’m kind of bummed because I wanted to try dance (since I currently suck at it) but that doesn’t count as a PE credit (it does at my current HS, but like whatever…)

@cameronlol I think I read an article on the Pomona student online newspaper/blog about a student who loved taking new PE courses. I am 100% not a sports person, but, who knows, I think the PE requirement could definitely lead to meeting some interesting classmates and potentially finding some new hobbies. (If you’re interested in reading the article: http://voices.pomona.edu/2015/04/pe-in-college/ ) Actually, I was just taking a look at the PE courses listing, and I think they might offer some dance PE classes like hip-hop/social/latin/etc.? Could be wrong.

Regardless, this forum is making me super excited about Pomona!.. but I think I might need to restrain myself for a bit since acceptance is very far from a guarantee

@sanvicente I know, we’re all so qualified but then again the competition is intense!

At Pomona all dance classes count as “creative expression”, a group of courses we are all required to take some class in (like art, etc…) And yeah I’m thinking swimming and diving will be fun! I’m skinny as hell but I’m hoping to develop a swimmer’s body… :stuck_out_tongue:

And thanks for the article!

@sanvicente Wow that article was interesting! Now I’m kind of excited for PE credits too… After doing Cross Country for 3 years (which I FREAKING HATED) I’m glad there are so many options! And yeah, you were right, hip-hop is a PE course
