Does anyone know whether Pomona will disclose how many ED1 applicants there were? I’d be curious to see how many more applied this year than last year.
Hello everyone! I applied ED1 as well. I was wondering what a request for midterm grades means, and what bearing the report would have on admissions decisions? Do they request reports from every applicant? I haven’t been contacted about one or anything, just curious (and a bit worried!)
I chose the create-a-class prompt as well and wrote about how food/cuisine is entangled with the formation of national/personal identity. Stuff about Vegemite in Australia, how colonialism shows up in food, cuisine as an intangible cultural heritage, etc etc.
Hoping we all get in! I have no doubt that all of us are very qualified regardless of how the decisions go (ง •̀_•́)ง
@golfcashoahu So apparently the Pomona blog will disclose an approximate number of ED applicants (at least, they did for the Class of 2018…). And apparently, the ED acceptance rate is right around 19%…
I’ve spent the last hour or so looking into their study abroad programs. I love that you can even petition for study abroad programs they don’t offer! King’s College London!!!
OH MY GOD ACTUALLY ■■■.
Check out this thread, if you dare:
Literally so scared now, I knew it was hard to get into Pomona, but didn’t know it was IMPOSSIBLE :((
Guys. Are they gonna email the decisions, or mail them physically? I’m international.
@penguindrum : from what I’ve heard in the past, if they ask for your mid year scores or whatever, it basically equals getting in. Not sure on this
@Submarina they email them, then you’ll get a packet later on (i think a few weeks later, but maybe sooner)
YIKES. My poor blood pressure…I’m even more anxious than before now…My quarter grades are not the best because one of my teachers misentered a test score, but now I’m not even sure if Pomona will ask for my grades!
Thanks @Submarina for answering my question!
@penguindrum Oh god I thought for a second that Pomona has sent you an email! I think they typically accept those that they requested reports from. The only time I’ve seen them not accepting a person is when he skipped a bunch of school? I think they only request reports for borderline applicants/verify that you’re a fit? That’s all an assumption though. And your essay sounds really interesting!!
@golfcashoahu Love your new picture lol and I think in the past, it’s been around 800? I think there will be a slight increase maybe?
Does anyone know whether the financial aid offer comes in the mail, in email form, or like it shows up when you check the portal?
@ravenclaws Nope, nothing of the sort! Sorry for causing alarm! I see, I see. Now I’m just incredibly nervous about a possible request for grades coming my way because it sounds like it will seal my fate. My biggest fear is now waiting for a request that will never come…Time to browse this forum and stress eat gummy worms for a couple hours…
Also, thank you! The premise of your essay was really compelling, and I think it’s extra relevant given current events. Shout out to your username, by the way. Ravens 4 Lyfe!!
D says the request for her midterm grades a couple of years ago went directly to her HS counselor, so she didn’t know about it until long after the fact. She also heard (albeit second hand) that ED1 apps were up this year about 30% over last.
@penguindrum :)) thank you!! and yes, I definitely feel the stress…especially since I have a 10 page paper and finals coming up as well:(
@otisp Oh crap, 30%?? Do you know where she heard this from?
@otisp Thank you for your comment. If it’s true that ED apps were up 30% (which sounds reasonable), that means around 900-1,000 people applied. Typically Pomona accepts around 120 (correct?) ED1. So, either the acceptance rate will be <15% or Pomona will take a larger percentage of its class early. I hope the latter happens, as this would also drive up Pomona’s yield.
I can’t remember where I read it, but I recall someone in the admissions office being quoted as saying that they do not like to admit more than about 1/3 of the class through ED1 and 2 (not counting Posse/QB), and that has certainly held for the past few years - and has kept Pomona’s ED admit rate almost as low as its RD. Colleges will sometimes increase their EDs to “game” their admit/yield rate, but Pomona certainly doesn’t need to do that.
As a parent who closely watched last year’s ED1 thread, I can sympathize with your anxiety but try to relax and be patient. (haha easy to say, I know). And don’t read too much into a request for midterm grades. There was a thread about it for last year’s ED1 class but it was not that many people, and of those who knew their grades were requested, some were accepted, at least two were deferred and at least one was rejected.
Also last year was the first year that Pomona put decisions on the portal, followed about 5 days later by the snail mail copy of the letter.
Oh god guys. “Starting ED1 committee today! Should be an exciting week.” So I think earliest we could expect is maybe this wednesday???
@ravenclaws do you know if they contact you once they’ve gone through all the applications, or if they send out emails as they go (like, if they were to accept/reject me today, would they let me know today?).
THIS IS THE MOMENT OF TRUTH! I know we are all super capable and I really love that we have developed this sense of community. Whatever happens, we are ALL amazing. (But we’re all gonna get in soo… )
Hey guys, I applied Early Decision to Pomona (without any hopes of getting in), and I never received an email confirming that they received my application. After a few weeks I emailed them about it and they replied confirming that they had received it (they must have forgotten about me). Now I am wondering if it is possible for me to check my application status. Can anyone post a link? I was never sent a student ID number or username to log into any sort of account.
@francesm The link is https://admissions.pomona.edu/apply/status and they should’ve sent you like a password to set up your account. I recommend maybe calling them since they’d probably take longer to answer emails?
@cameronlol I’m pretty sure when they do the committee thing, it’s completely anonymous so they would need to finish the whole committee process before contacting everyone. And ahh i’m so scared!!
lolol why are they even on the pomona thread?? and ugh yeah looking at past years, it takes 5 days after committees start to send out results so I think it’s like 85% likely for Friday to be decision day!
