Class of 2020 RD

@egaliteoulamort no, that should not affect your chance of getting into the school, especially if you’ve showed interest in other ways. The honors courses aren’t for everyone so I don’t think not applying will hurt you xx

@gonewiththeair So you can be accepted into special programs before you know that you get into American? Or is it that if you applied to a special program and you got in to American AND the special program you get notified early?

Hi guys! I’m from Massachusetts. AU is definitely my top choice. I want to double major in Neuroscience (so excited they just introduced it as a major) and psychology with a minor in leadership and management. DC is my favorite city in the US and I would be beyond excited to spend the next four years at AU. I applied to the honors program but more as a way to show my interest than because I actually think I have a chance at getting in. Hopefully I’ll get to meet some of y’all on campus next fall! Best of luck to everyone!

@ellesea no, if you get into a special program you also get into American xx

Prospective parent here…d really has her heart set on American,

My daughter is super excited about AU, career in journalism/law specializing in Middle Eastern politics. 5 AP classes, the rest honors, 3.87 GPA, class rank in top 15%, 1810 SATs (English great, math not so muchso),editor of school newspaper and head lawyer for mock trial, decent ECs, good essay…chances?

@Leapie45 I think the thing to know about American is that they take expressed interest very, very seriously. I take it your daughter did not apply test optional?
Regardless, I think if your daughter has made several attempts to show interest, she’ll have a good chance of getting in.

Did everyone here get any emails or notifications from the admission office? I submitted my application by the deadline but have not received anything yet. Also are there interview opportunities at AU? If so, how do they work? Thanks!!

@freshlemon123 You probably won’t get an email-- I don’t think I did and I submitted my RD app in November, so I would have gotten it by now. What you can do to make sure they got everything is go to the prospective student portal on American’s website. You may have gotten an email with a password for that months ago. If not, you can probably request one.

Hey guys! I’m Kaitlyn and I’m from Virginia. I applied RD in time to be considered for scholarships and I’d like to major in political science. Do you think expressing interest is crucial to being accepted? I haven’t attended any information sessions and I didn’t apply to the honors college so I’m a bit worried that I won’t get in.

Hi! I’m Carolyn and I’m from Boston; I applied for International Business and also have interest in GWU and Georgetown (as a reach). Does anyone know anything about the students at American? Is it evident that the amount of girls outnumbers the boys? Also, do decisions come out through mail or on the portal? Thanks and good luck guys!

I just got an email today that they received my application. Weird…but exciting nonetheless.

@Lana22 American sends decisions only through physical mail.

@knoval It’s never too late to express interest - shoot an email to your counselor. They may or may not respond. If you look on the website you’ll probably see lots of little ways to show them that you’re interested. Looking at threads from past years, it’s clear that interest is a big deal.

Hi I’m from San Antonio, Texas! I didn’t apply to any of the additional programs at AU but I want to participate in university college but we can’t sign up for that until were admitted:/. Anyways I want to double major in Business Language and Culture (either French or Spanish but since I’m fluent in Spanish I’ll probably do French) and accounting. I have spoken to my home state admissions counselor a few times and I attended a preview day over the summer, which is when I fell in love with the business language and culture major because that’s exactly what I want to do. Hope to see y’all next year at AU!

D1 is a sophomore at AU and loves the school and DC. She is a psych major and marketing minor and is already doing an internship. She is also in a sorority and has made great friends. Yes there are many more girls than guys on campus, no denying. She says the kids are all friendly and profs for the most part are great.
She did get her acceptance in the mail but unless they are doing things differently than two years ago, it was also posted on the portal. D2 is also applying to AU this year so we may be an all AU family soon!

@anothermuggle hi! I was glancing at your comment, haha. You mentioned about “showing interest”; what do you mean by this? Do you mean by asking questions via email to the admission officers/counselors?

@freshlemon123 Showing interest = Emailing/communicating with admissions counselor, interview, doing one of their online info sessions, visiting campus, etc. Basically all your interactions with the individual school. Schools like American that take interest into account try to identify which applicants are actually serious about attending the school, often combatting those applicants who are using the school as a safety, because they want to maintain a certain yield or acceptance rate.

D applied RD (SIS/Global Scholars). She will graduate with academic honors and
full IB Diploma. She choose her international affairs/poli-sci major after attending Yale University’s Explo@Foreign Affairs Focus. Our private school has students at AU’s SIS (Global Scholars) so we are praying the trend continues

Hi! My name is Eliana and I’m from Maryland. I plan to major in International Relations. I also applied to the Honors, Frederick Douglass, and Global Scholars programs. Does anyone know whether there is a second round for these three programs? I know last year semifinalists were notified around this time. Good luck everyone!
