I was thinking the exact same thing about just sending it in! She had two different versions of it and both were too long so I went ahead and combined the best of the two and shortened it myself because I was tired of nagging! She’s a really good writer…way better than me, but I’m a good editor and better at grammar.
Also as far as NHS, our school requires 100 hours of service but the nearby regional school district, which encompasses about five local high schools, only requires 60! So not fair! It’s all a bunch of crap anyway lol. I just want her to wear the tassels at graduation, I don’t think it will affect her college acceptances.
I don’t think my S’s school did ANY service hours for NHS. It was just a “prestige” thing as far as he was concerned. His mom would have liked to see the tassel, too. But then what does that say about tassels and moms. . .
@toowonderful I get that it’s annoying getting notices and reminders from parents. I have made my D do everything except for one recommender I did actually say something to them because we have that situation where the whole family is friends with her not just my D & I see her more and have contact with her a lot . That’s what is upsetting as it’s still not getting done and my D is actually upset about it since we have known that person forever in theatre.
As for NHS my D’s school has a selection process based on a very high GPA & service and other factors . Our district requires 70 service hours to graduate in general so that’s not unusual for the kids to have a lot of so actually most NHS kids have more plus leadership roles in student council etc. however the neighboring state has a low GPA To get in and not much service so it’s most definitely a crap shoot and the colleges know this.
Yes @mom4bwayboy moms need the tassel! Lol
So good we are not the only ones in this boat!! Having mild anxiety attacks!! D worked 8 hours on Sunday writing essays( and already had the common app written) . I then told her on Monday just stay home from school work all day and get these apps in! At the end of the day we had one completely in and couldn’t get pdf to work for others. Thought we would kill each other… haha She made a google doc. File named each essay for each school , filled out most general information( I will do financial stuff ) and I told her I would complete and hit send. Met with counselor st school , asked for letters and rec’s. Revamped resume ; only left leads on… picked picture… ordered… But after countless hours still only have one in!! She worked for hours perfecting these essays(a great writer) but I finally said enough!! They just have to go!! Now on to prescreens , when I don’t know.she has a shoe opening soon… intensive rehearsals and plus an acapella group., and 7 full classes with lots of work. Trying to not nag , but hate for her to miss more school! How many days did most miss last year?
I keep thinking once the apps are in and auditions set it’s a little better…
@musicmama123 I’m pretty sure that essays (and a few prescreens that have requirements outside the box) are what’s holding my D up as well. 3 months ago? I would have told you that she would have had EVERYTHING submitted by 9/15; 10/1 latest.
Fair warning- In the vein of the PDF won’t load (and frustrations are high). Getting prescreen video to load took WAY (as in hours) longer than I had anticipated. Hopefully that has improved in the last two years!!
My D missed about 6 days of school last year for college stuff. Not including 2 days for thescon - she went with her school so I didn’t count those. 4 days were for Unifieds and two days were for campus visits/callbacks.
same here!
Agree with @toowonderful on the prescreen uploading issues. PLEASE say it’s better than it was three years ago. We ended up having elder S go to local university campus to upload on faster internet. UGH! So glad that’s over.
Just a little reminder – Our D did absolutely everything regarding her applications and auditions. I stayed up with her at night while she toiled away getting everything done after school and dance and voice. I drove her to lessons (still doesn’t have her license – too busy :)), fed her, clothed her, made travel arrangements and paid for all expenses. She did very well overall with the audition season but she did have one screw-up – she forgot to pay her audition fee at one of the schools. She auditioned and still didn’t remember to pay the fee online. So, guess what? Her audition was thrown out! So, I share because I seem to remember some folks set up completely separate email addresses for audition/application purposes only, with both the parent and student having access. I think this is brilliant! Our D was exhausted so she was bound to make a mistake somewhere along the line. If I had had access to the account, I could have double-checked the emails and helped her not to miss an important one, like a reminder to pay an audition fee. Just an FYI to help you all out. Good luck!
Sorry for typos guys… I guess I need to wear my glasses…lol!!
My D missed 7 days total for college “stuff” (including Unifieds - but she only did Chicago). 5-10 seemed standard; some kids did only on campus auditions. AND catching up after a few consecutive misses is a challenge (even though she had access to her assignments online and worked on homework on the drive to/from Unifieds and during some of her breaks). As for uploads, it took us over 6 HOURS last year to get my D’s Guthrie callback to load and once it loaded, I found a problem in the very early portion (her intro) so it wasn’t perfect by any stretch. She had to run for a call so I just sent it (rather than try to correct the issue and re-start the process). Don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress/completion! I was worried if it loaded past the deadline, they would not review it at all. Since she was already at her call, I included in her email an explanation of the early issue we had with the upload. It turned out not to be an issue but those uploads/prescreens can get very frustrating if your connection isn’t REALLY speedy (or you don’t have access to someone who knows what they are doing - there are ways to condense the files for quicker uploads but I am clueless!).
Our plan is for D to miss two, maybe 3 Fridays for on campus auditions. Chicago Unifieds is a class trip, so we don’t have to count that I do worry that due to weather, cold/flu season, exhausted chauffeurs (lol), etc-it may wind up being double that.
The big unknown is the sickness! Our school year this year began with mono - 2 of my kids got it (one worse than the other). We got very lucky - the younger one missed just under 2 weeks (the older one missed a few days). It could have been so much worse. I had to keep the younger 2 away from their sister (who left for college in August) the last 10 days or so she was home. It was torture but imagine starting one of these programs with mono?! Push the Emergen-C, zinc and frequent hand-washing. All bets are off when they in a show - if one gets sick…
D has submitted 13/15 applications (and corresponding prescreens, as applicable). Has received 4 academic acceptances and has passed 2 prescreens. Best news of all: D got her flu shot this morning! How is everyone else doing? November is around the corner-holy cow!
@owensfolks- have been meaning to get flu shots but haven’t. Your timely reminder is the boost I needed. On this end. D has completed all applications but not a single prescreen so am feeling anxious about that.
D is submitting last two schools right now. We had 9 schools on our list. All prescreens done. Passed one, waiting for 3 others. I applaud you owensfolks, 15 schools? You and your daughter are troopers, congrats! Keep plugging along everyone. Some of my D’s schools are having technology issues, one froze during payment and others are just really slow to confirm they have received test scores and transcripts letters of rec etc. But, I know this kind of thing is normal or par for the course, which makes me glad we are getting this done early(ish).
I think you’ll find 15 schools is pretty standard, especially for girls. Mine originally had 17 on her list, which we winnowed down to 14 when she got an early acceptance, and she wound up with five acceptances, three BFA and two BA programs.
@CTDramaMom I am seeing that 15 looks likes the norm and with good reason. It gives you an opportunity to have a good mix. We are done with applications, so I am going to fight the urge to add an extra school or two at this point…I think…lol. I really admire those of you that did or are doing 15 schools.
