Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

Last year our number was 26 I believe – 2 were non audition. To this day I do not think we did too many – not for a girl; although in hindsight some of our applications were for schools my D was not very interested in but were added based on the programs; when you are creating the list it’s so difficult because you have to weigh the “I do not like it here” against a “I don’t care if I don’t like this school, this is a great program” – if we did it again I would eliminate the latter category.

So, it looks like BoCo is going to wait until Friday to update their portal, even though the decisions have been made. Why do they make us wait?! Haven’t they made us crazy enough by now?! :((

One cannot compare the process of getting into an MT or Acting program with that of applying to general admission. The range of acceptance rates among the Ivies is Harvard at 5.3% to Cornell at 14.9% (class if 2019). The majority of MT programs will have acceptance rates within that range, and many are below 5%. The difference is, there is no mathematical norm to judge your potential success in applying to a specific MT program. There is no SAT for performers. So it would be as if you are applying to all Ivy League schools, without grades or SAT scores. All audition MT programs are a high risk. The more you apply to, the more chances you have. As in professional auditions, it takes a lot of no’s to get to YES. Unfortunately, I know too many whose lists were not big enough, who ended up with 1 or 0 choices. Audition early. If you get an early offer, you will likely be able to shorten your list.

@CATenorMom how do you know about BoCo? Did you call?

@CATenorMom - they don’t want NYU to steal the last bow on them (since NYU “should” release at 5:00 friday)

Good point @mtmamma2020 “not for a girl”. My D is blond and blue eyed so just because of that she needed more. @toowonderful probably a little bit of both. As you probably remember, my D let a few schools go because she either didn’t feel like finishing the supplement or preconceived notions about the student body (Penn State, Elon and Michigan). Michigan was another reach so that one doesn’t bother me as much but I believe she would have gotten into Elon (she passed the prescreen). I regret taking UArts and Temple off the list as well as U. Arizona and Arizona State. The four UC schools were such reaches for an OOS student with average test scores that I shouldn’t have even counted them. The thing is that she really wanted to be in California so I found as many schools as I could for her to apply to there. I actually can’t think of any we left out other than Pepperdine and USD (non-audition). There were geographical areas that we completely left out…literally the entire center of the country except for U Minn/Guthrie. This mainly because she just couldn’t see herself in the midwest. Honestly, several weeks ago I took a good long look at the list and started to doubt it. I said something to her and she just got annoyed with me and I didn’t push it further. My D’s personality is not always easy so there was only so much I could say to her without getting her pissed off at me. Another thing is that I really didn’t imagine she would be waitlisted at three top choices…so close yet so far!

Agreed. I assumed in this thread on the MT forum, that we were all discussing the BFA/audition schools for MT (or even acting).

@marg928 - I get it. My D had a similar “no go” thing with the south, and in hindsight I think UNCSA could have been a good thing to have on the list etc… BUT, the waitlists mean things aren’t over year- who knows, in another week or so you could be singing a different tune

Boco has been on spring break but they are back today…not sure if that is part of the reason for the delay.

This process really is like no other. I think we all could think of things we would do differently at this point, but isn’t that true of most things in life when you have the benefit of hindsight. My D auditioned for 26 schools and we actually spent a lot of time on making the list so there isn’t much I would change. She was firm on wanting an auditioned BFA in MT or Acting and she desired more of a conservatory type of program with limited GE so she really had no safety option. That is why the net was cast very wide! We were a little late with the application process so she did miss out on audition slots at BW and CCM which was too bad, although CCM is such a reach that I didn’t lose much sleep on that one. There were a couple of scheduled auditions that just didn’t happen at Chicago Unifieds due to her suffering a severe allergic reaction on our last morning but that 's when you just throw up your hands and figure it wasn’t meant to be. But overall I feel like we both gave it our all - it was definitely a team effort - and she has ended up with some really great choices and fingers still crossed for a couple more. I’m just so grateful for all of the information I have gleaned from this board over the past few years that helped immensely. I hope now I can pass it on to the next group of parents following this path.

@toowonderful NYU has already notified applicants that they will release on Thursday, 3/30, throughout the day via a unique email link to each applicant. So, maybe BoCo is really going for the final bow by waiting until Friday? That’s hilarious and sad at the same time.

@marg928 Our Ds sound so very similar, both in looks and in personality! :)) I feel your pain with pushing the discussion too far, especially at this point in the process. At least they have choices!

@marg928 - 4 BFA acceptances and 3 WLs is nothing to sneeze at- focus on the good!

We did 7 MT auditions - with the hopes that D would get in one - only “regret” is that perhaps she should have applied to Temple and UArts, especially since her vocal teacher teaches at UArts - but she wasn’t interested in studying in Philly. Kids can apply to every program in the country, but they also have to like the program/school/area of the country in which they will be studying. My D definitely limited her choices - especially when 3 of the schools were very, very BIG reaches. At the end of the day, she is happy with her results and that makes me happy too!

FYI NYU is releasing their decisions on Thursday, 3/30. Says so on the admissions website.

Does anyone know when Manhattan School of Music is releasing decisions? I’m unable to find a specific date.

@toowonderful I know you’re right! Especially since she really has almost zero theater experience. I think the USC denial hit me hard though. Of course I knew it was a reach all along but the fact that they could have easily given her the BA and didn’t just gets my goat. Like I said in the past…their BA is an academic admit. I’m sure she didn’t get in because of her average/low SAT/ACT score. They have never taken anyone from our HS and this year three applied. They took the one that only applied to see if she would get in. The other two, including my D, visited the campus and were serious about attending. Just makes my blood boil! Especially since the kid who got in used to be my D’s best friend and then decided to make her life miserable! Sour grapes much? LOLOLOL

@theatremom10 someone over in MSM thread said last year they updated portal on Mar. 28. That would have been Monday of the last week in March–which is today. Others had been told “last week in March” at auditions. I have been compulsively refreshing the portal just in case–LOL.

@theatremom10 It sounds like Manhattan School of Music will also be releasing decisions on Friday or Saturday. So much waiting! I’m over it.

@tabers You are exactly right…I wish we had put more schools on my D’s list. 15 wasn’t enough. Here we sit w/o any offers and only a few left to hear from. It’s been brutal. The more schools, the better chance of getting in at least somewhere. My D is beside herself at this point.
