You get instate tuition which is AMAZING! Great training and a great price!
@marg928 it’s hard though isn’t it? I don’t know about you but my girl is not excited about her other choices - she seems to be the Queen of the Waitlist. She has a few other schools she loved and guess what -she is waitlisted. The one’s she got accepted to she doesn’t really want to go to. And I feel bad saying that because I know that some people really want to get in one. But it would be so much money to send her to somewhere she doesn’t really want to be - . We are just in waitlist hell.
@singoutlouise Here’s the final decision thread I saw in the pinned threads at the top of the list. Is this what you’re looking for?

Good vibes that your D is off one of those waitlists very soon!
@ginja17 @bisouu is right…if price is very important to you then it’s still worth looking at. We are in state and my D refused to apply. Kids talk and she has heard many times that there’s nothing to do on the weekends. Plus she wanted out of NJ so that’s another reason. I said this same thing to someone else here and she didn’t care about that at all so everyone is different.
My daughter goes to a school that is VERY small (400) in her class. The town is cute but nothing to do there really. BUT she is a very short train ride into NYC which is the ultimate theatre kid’s playground. She does not feel bored at all.
@ginja17 another good point @bisouu. The nice thing is that there is a train station right on campus so it would be very easy to get into NYC. The issue is that there are a lot of in state kids who would just rather go home for the weekend than be bored or start traipsing to the city, which leads to less kids on campus and less to do…catch 22.
@singoutlouise I’m LITERALLY using the same terminology…WAITLIST HELL lol!
My D would have killed to go to Montclair for MT. And my oldest D graduated from there in 2014. It’s a very nice campus and you can’t beat the proximity to NYC. There are a lot of new dorms. The theatres are beautiful. And if you have a car, there are things to do. I know a lot of kids who also lived in NJ who didn’t want to go there. No one wants to go to their “state” school typically. We used to live in Jersey, now in Florida. And guess what, my D doesn’t want to go to UCF either…but for MT, at this point, I think she would be open to anywhere.
I am pulling for everybody: Those in Waitlist Hell, those who don’t have a BFA MT offer (yet.) We had a lot of downs in this process-A LOT. I am still a bit freaked out by my D’s decision; but she is 100% locked and loaded, and looking for a roommate on social media. So I DO have to agree with those who have gone before us-it will be ok!
@owensfolks when do we get the scoop?!?!?!?!
congrats @owensfolks we are locked and loaded too feels good to be off the crazy train!
For those waiting on Syracuse, NYU and Boco – all three traditionally make more offers than the other schools and they take a larger class. This craziness is almost over!! As for those on waitlists…hang in there – remember everyone can only pick 1! There will be spots opening up!
Anyone else still waiting on Western Michigan Acting? The very last one we are waiting on.
The train station on campus is a plus! But I think she would be so lonely on campus and she certainly couldn’t just leave and come home.
Thank you all for your comments!
Where did your D decide to go??
We are still waiting on NYU
My daughter took the opposite approach and applied to her “top” choices first. Since they want to accept different "types, she didn’t want to risk someone else of a similar “type” auditioning/being accepted in November and December. She also had been rehearsing her material all summer and didn’t think it would change that much by waiting another month. We also didn’t want to risk bad weather for travel and cold/flu season. In the end, your kid knows what works best - my daughter mentioned she thinks the adrenaline and nervous energy just added to her audition. Turns out her final decision was for the school where she had her first audition.
Just for the record my kid applied at 10 schools for MT. One was a non audition school so 11 total.
I feel like we should have done closer to 15 …that being said kudos to the person who auditioned for 35 programs…If we had applied at more then 20 I wouldn’t be posting here because I would be legit in a mental health ward.
No offense to you @tabers I applaud your scheduling skill and mental toughness!
My D did not get into any BFA MT programs. I know we made a ton of mistakes in the process. She is very new to MT . Her list was not very realistic and way too small. No coach.
Initially I thought there is no way she is going to get in anywhere but then she passed most of her prescreens so we started to believe that maybe it was a possibility. But unfortunately no-didn’t happen. I think she is sad but coming to terms with it. She is not giving up. She may try to transfer next year. Luckily she did audition (BA Theatre and Dance) for our states flagship public university. She threw that audition in there-thank goodness and got in. So that is what she will do. And luckily for her parents it’s in our hometown. Silver lining!
Ditto what @bisouu said @owensfolks ! Are you preparing your Final Decisions Thesis?!
@missnypizza There are still some MT BA programs out there that might still be accepting applications and auditioning. We had a few of these on our list that we dropped off and cancelled the appointments. For 4/1 application deadlines (and 4/1 audition dates) are Salem State University (MA) and Plymouth State College (NH). Both were recommended to us. I believe that Salem State has the option to audition now or in the Fall for BFA Theatre with MT concentration. Best wishes to you and your daughter.
