Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

@owensfolks nope not yet. They said they would begin reviewing them on 11/1 so I was hoping by now…

@marg928 You pay 20K a year or the scholarship pays out 20K a year?

Anyone heard from penn state on there prescreen yet?

The scholarship is $20k per year

We went on a tour at Pace last year and they showed tuition to be $58,000 per year with the average aid/scholarship package being about $35,000. Who knows. I would love to know what MT kids are getting in terms of Aid/Scholarships.

Re: scholarships at Pace: My S was offered $35k 3 years ago; my D $25k last year.

@artskids did they offer that just based on their applications or did they have to apply for scholarships separately? Thanks!

@lincoln56 My D heard pack from Penn State re prescreen about 2 weeks ago. She submitted it on 10/12.

@Mel2421 I can’t speak for what others got but I can tell you that my daughter got a total of $19,000 a year and it was all merit money as we did not qualify for any financial aid. And no we did not have to apply separately, all incoming freshmen are considered automatically.

For Pace, or any other university, you can find numbers regarding their need-based and non-need-based financial awards at College Data - Your Online College Advisor, which is a compendium of the Common Data Set information distributed by universities that is used by the College Board, US News, and Petersons. You can also usually find this posted somewhere on the universities’ website (but not always). The Common Data Set is a “treasure trove” of useful information when closely evaluating schools including admissions data (SAT scores, incoming GPA’s), average merit-based and need-based financial awards, percentage of students receiving financial aid, and a host of other data.

For example, for Pace University for 2014-2105:
Merit-based Awards: 20.7% of freshmen had no financial need and received merit aid, average amount $19,391.
Need-based Awards: 76.2% of freshman received need-based aid with the average award being $31,015 including need-based gifts (average = $26,448) and self-help gifts (loans and jobs, average = $4,465).

This info is from the “Money Matters” tab for Pace on the College Data website. Note that, to calculate the percentage of students receiving need-based financial aid, you have to multiply the percentage of students that applied for fin aid by the percentage that received fin aid.

I found it very annoying that Penn State basically asked for a research paper on their supplement for the acting BFA. It’s a lot to ask and my D has not gotten to it yet.

D heard back re Syracuse prescreen today. Submitted 11/2.

U of mich is asking for the same lots of supplements which we have not gotten to either

@lincoln56 my s heard back 6 days after submitting prescreen

Supplements are a way for the school to gauge genuine interest. They’re a pain to write and so they can be a tool for the college to better their yield, as the supplements filter out people who aren’t that interested in the college. I think it can help to keep that in mind.

I understand about the supplements and I have to say my D has done a fantastic job on them. She still has a few more to go. However, Penn State wants a full on paper 3-5 pages about an artist you admire written with five references and only two can be online sources! oh and with MLA citation! What the heck? That’s just above and beyond in my opinion. Plus they’re not going to Unifieds for the acting program, only MT. I have a feeling it won’t get done and I won’t blame her if she doesn’t want to write a paper in addition to all the school work she has. We loved Penn State’s campus but there are plenty of other schools to choose from. Plus, this is only the first year for the BFA so that’s something to take into consideration.

Wow @marg928 - that seems over the top! Is this how Penn State is weeding? Seems to me they will miss out on a boatload of talent.

@Mel2421 Pace offered the $$ based on the application package (grades, test scores, essays). They got their financial offers before their BFA acceptances.

@marg928 Is all that required before you even know if you have passed the prescreen?

Thanks @artskids! Here is to the waiting game.
