Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

So while my D was rejected by Hartt, the University offered her an amazing merit scholarship. Why else would a MT student go to that school if they didn’t get into MT. I know they offer Acting, but she would need to audition for that and they probably are past that time. Do they offer any vocal performace degrees?

Hartt offers dance

@aquarose26 they do offer vocal performance

@aquarose Hartt is very good music school - they do have a program in Vocal Performance. My daughter’s voice teacher is a graduate of Hartt (at the time Opera Studies - their MT program did not exist). Also one of my closest high school friends attended Hartt and then went on to Julliard and sang in opera companies all over the world. She had excellent training!

And we finally received a call from UWSP. D is an alternate! I think our decision is made. PHEW what a ride. Cheers and thanks to all on CC. I couldn’t have made it this far without you!

Can’t wait to hear your D’s final decision, @ALS0830 !

Congrats to you Als0830!!

I am so grateful for all the helpful people here. Likewise, I am a little bit concerned about people leaving the coveted BFA programs. I know kids transfer out of all types of programs but this is so hard to get into! Likewise, I would be so appreciative to hear the feedback about why the program was not a good fit? What should we try to assess? The hard part is, the odds of getting in are so low, you feel you have to go where you get in?

S finally heard from UArts - yes. Haven’t heard anything about money yet. Anyone know where they tend to fall in the lineup of scholarships, need based, etc. He asked the questions but hasn’t receive any answers. He also has been in contact with ASU. I’m proud of him for starting to advocate for himself, ask the hard questions, and try to negotiate this process. He’s needed to grow up for a while and it’s happening very fast with this process.

@aquarose26 The University of Hartford offers many academic programs that aren’t part of the Hartt School. The Hartt School is the music/theatre/dance part of the University of Hartford. You can use the merit scholarship for any of the non arts programs just like Pace if you’re not accepted to the auditioned program.

@Believe11 We’re waiting on Webster, also. My D is going to call them tomorrow.

@theotherparent, congratulations on your son’s acceptance to UArts! They can be very generous. If the financial package is not what you’re hoping, you may want to contact the head or assistant head of financial aid; they are extremely kind and helpful. (That’s what we did, and they gave D more than they did initially–and they were generous to begin with.)

Thank you @myloves . That is great to know! He’s already sent an email to the admissions office asking How/ when he’ll receive that information.

Hi, my loves and everyone. I am so happy to have found this group, that shares information and supports one another through this grueling process. My daughter is a junior and we are gearing up for MT and Acting auditions next year. I love my stage mom friends.

We may have the same vocal coach! Are they in NYC? Did you feel they prepared you properly or do you recommend using an audition prep consultant, or maybe just CC. Thank you for sharing your story.

@soozievt Thank you so much for sharing your perspective, especially since your daughter went through Tisch. NYU Tisch is at the top of my daughter’s list, but I worry about the negative feedback that I have heard from others. I’ve even heard from folks connected to the acting studios that Tisch is overpriced and they are producing cookie cutter kids. I don’t want to believe that. My daughter has attended one of the studios summer programs already and is probably heading to another this summer. Do you think that is a good use of time and money? The acting training has been very strong, according to my daughter who wants to pushed and taught. NYU is still a top choice and I would love suggestions on how to strengthen her skill set/resume/preparation. Which matters most? Audition prep, or summer experience?

Ok if anyone follows auditioning for college dot com blog that @VoiceTeacher writes, good article on there to read just posted .

@FourStars - My D is a junior at Tisch in an Acting studio. (Stella Adler). I would say that NYU kids have to be the “least” cookie cutter - just b/c there are so many more of them than there are at other schools. My D also did the summer program there, and while IDK if that had anything to do with her eventual acceptance (though it was nice that she had worked with 3 of the 5 people on her audition panel for a month, they knew more about her than you would see in a 15 minute audition/interview) I know that it helped to solidify that NYU provided the type of environment she wanted.

@Mardeen would you please let me know what you find out. I would appreciate it. My S is waiting. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing that and I read, but I am pretty sure your hand will get slapped for that. Not even spelling out will get around the rules here. Sorry. I have learned that lesson

@FourStars I completely agree with @toowonderful. My daughter is graduating from Tisch in May and the last words I would use to describe it is producing cookie cutter kids. The studios train completely differently, the students that are placed in each studio are very different, and their results are very different. I am always amazed after every performance that I go to at the level of talent that NYU produces. This year my daughter is in Stonestreet and the training she is receiving in film and tv is amazing. I am also surprised about how much of the negativity I hear about Tisch. Tisch is consistently rated as one of the top drama programs in the country and if you look at the success of their graduates across the board (Tonys, Emmys, SAG awards…) I think that speaks for itself of the quality of the education they receive there. (Also, regarding overpriced – my daughter was choosing between UCLA and NYU, the cost was exactly the same!)
