Not to harp on the penn state paper lol but my question is … how much are they taking this paper into consideration anyway. I mean we ALL know the audition is the key factor and maybe if they were on the fence about someone then yes, maybe they would say " gee let’s read that 3 pg paper he wrote and see what it says" but I am thinking who has time for that! Maybe it is because it’s the new acting BFA so perhaps they want more of a writing factor involved in that student which I sorta get but Lordy if my D would’ve had to do then she woulda went crazy! All the other stuff is enough work!
agreed @theaterwork. I can see asking for it after the student passes the pre-screen as part of the departmental supplement to be evaluated along with the audition. Asking for something like that beforehand is ludicrous. I hope they’re on here lurking LOL!
The idea of the paper certainly isn’t conducive to people who are applying to 20+ schools… but perhaps the schools themselves don’t realize (Or approve of) how many applications/auditions various kids are doing. At any rate, no one is making anyone apply/audition for any school… and while they might miss some strong people by including the requirement of a paper, something tells me they will manage to fill a talented class with those who were willing to write it. Heck- if this is a system of weeding people out- it might give a person who wrote it much better odds (due to self-selecting numbers) than a school where all you have to do is click “apply” on the common app…
First audition tomorrow. Extra tights, CHECK, throat coat tea, CHECK extra music, CHECK…Mom that’s a bundle of nerves CHECK CHECK CHECK! First audition and it’s at the school that is at the top of her list. That was just the way the scheduling worked out. Ladies and Gents this is not for the faint of heart and I’m not even the one in the room where it happens! Thank God we have a football playoff game in the city where she is auditioning tomorrow. She is performing at half time and will be in the stands all night. She will be busy and I will be in the stands trying not to be nervous for tomorrow. Here we go!
@marg928 After reviewing the theatre programs in Alabama (we live in the state) my daughter is auditioning at UAB (tomorrow :o ) and Alabama. Montevallo also has a great program. Auburn’s program isn’t as well known. That isn’t to say that it isn’t good, but it just didn’t make the cut on my daughter’s list. All of my daughter’s friends are going to Auburn. It is a wonderful school.
@brightstaral my daughter was accepted at UAB and UA. There is no audition for straight acting only for scholarship. I would love to hear more about the programs at the schools.
Break a leg to all auditioning this weekend! My D is also!
Yes, BAL everyone! My D has audition #2 tomorrow: Catawba College.
My D is going for MT meanwhile still waiting for the prescreen pass at Penn YIKES!!!
@lincoln56 just remember it’s Penn State. Penn is an Ivy League in philly. Two completely different schools
Val Accetta at UAB is WONDERFUL!!! We know someone who goes there and loves it! It is still relatively new, so the program is smaller and there are lots of opportunities to perform.
UAB gave her some merit $ which was nice
Who had auditions this weekend? Would love to hear as much, or as little, as you feel comfortable sharing! D had Scholarship Weekend at Catawba College. it was a small group-and the faculty and current students were so impressive. If anyone is looking for a little bit safer (academically,in terms of competitiveness-for all theater disciplines, AND affordability) I really cannot underscore how great our day was yesterday.
My D had her 1st audition this weekend. Having read here for many years I’m aware that there is sometimes no correlation between how you think it went and chances for admission. Putting admission results to the side: My D was not asked to sing her 2nd somg… Is that a bad sign? Or does it mean different things to different programs? Are there ANY signs in “the room” that can be clearly viewed as a positive or negative???
The audition my daughter felt she did the best in, where they spent an incredible amount of time with her she was not admitted. The audition she felt she bombed, she got in. Go figure.
My S had his first audition this weekend and was accepted into the program!
That’s amazing @Barrie08! Congratulations! So nice to have great news early.
@MTMHopeful, I always hear stories like bisouu’s D, that you just can’t tell. This is really good to keep in mind.
In my own kids’ cases though - just their own - my kids could usually tell interest or disinterest, but it was always more a vibe than whether they were asked to do another piece. Not asking for another piece doesn’t necessarily mean anything.
Regardless, be sure to put it out of your mind, and move forward to the next task. The other thing to remember is sometimes you have failures in the beginning–don’t let it get to you. Stick to the big picture. For both my S and D, one in LAMDA, the other in NU, they had disappointing results in the first few auditions.
Has anyone heard back on Chapman’s pre-screen?
D heard back from Ithaca prescreen today. Submitted 11/1. Still waiting on Elon (looks like she won’t hear until January), FSU, and Otterbein.
