I am also mom to a theater kid from rural New England (his HS had an ag program with, literally, cows living on the grounds), and should mentioned that almost everyone interesting that I ever met in NYC was from somewhere else, often very small towns. It’s not where you start but where you end up and how much you do along the way.
Hard to believe we went to college before the advent of social media. Love that our kids are already making BFFs on FB and all the other messaging groups these young ones enjoy. Certainly allays the fear of the unknown for both child and mom. I remember calling my future roommate and talking about our home lives, interests and intended comforter colors as my dad was knocking on the door reminding me that long distance calls cost money.
@MomofMTBoy It is really a big upside of social media and certainly helps alleviate my anxiety about her going so far away. Not to mention how helpful Skype and Facetime will prove to be once she is across the country - although I’m guessing her boyfriend will get more time then me!
D just taken off waitlist for Drake, anyone with information on their BFA Acting program? I’ve heard great things but would love to hear from others who may have already made their commitment either for MT or Acting.
@admission2017 Hello…a very good friend of my D was accepted for MT there and did not know a whole lot about Drake at first as it was a walk in at unifieds. But after going there and visiting, he was hooked. He said he loved the campus, the faculty, the students and was really impressed with the classes he sat in on. He even spent the night in the dorm. He said he “felt” at home. So maybe a visit will help you!!
@missnypizza thank you so much for the feedback. And yes, a visit is in our future. Iowa was not what we had set our sites on but the campus and people have so far been very positive. Thanks again!!
Anyone attending UAB for musical theatre?
@broadwayboy223 - My D almost went there before she came off the Tisch waitlist, but one of her best friends just finished her freshman year and LOVED it. I’ll be happy to put you in touch if you want to PM me your contact info (her family just lost an important loved one so it may be a few days before she can reach out). D and my spouse visited Birmingham last spring & the school & town & Valeria Accetta & co. convinced them it was the place to be over many other programs…NYU was the only place that could have caused her to change her mind. I highly recommend it as an up & coming program that is going to be very competitive in the future (but more importantly, provide the kind of training that casting directors are looking for).
so i’m an international student and was waitlisted at a number of different schools. if i get off the waitlist, will they still call me? there is a 12 hour time difference between east coast and where i live. will they call multiple times, or do you think they’ll send me an email?
D was accepted from 2 waitlists. One texted and called, the other emailed and mailed. Good luck!
Quick question and sorry if I missed this anywhere in another thread (I did try to search it). I was told by recruitment at another school that Victoria Bussert is leaving Baldwin Wallace. Anyone have confirmation on that? @IfYouOnlyKnew ? Just want to have accurate info to pass on to kids if that is the case. Thanks!
@stagedoormama Unless she was not truthful to my S’s class, she is not leaving. They are seniors now and addressed it with her before the end of the school year. She is directing Lizzie in Chicago in the Fall (after Hunchback) but has told the students directly she is NOT leaving and will be working with them on their showcase.
@artskids Thanks! I know of some kids who de-committed because she was leaving… So will be interesting to see how it shakes out.
@stagedoormama It would be interesting to know where they got their information. I hope they didn’t “de-commit” based on rumors. @kategrizz @IfYouOnlyKnew ?
@stagedoormama @artskids I’ve heard she is staying put from my student. He said he had a conversation directly with her about the rumors. I can only repeat what he told me. He said she is not leaving. When these students de-committed did they speak to her directly and tell her why?
@IfYouOnlyKnew @artskids -No idea if they did. I hope they didn’t based on rumors as well. That’s why I was trying to get a clear answer on the whole thing, because I don’t want to be giving incorrect info if I am asked about it by future students.
@stagedoormama - I can only reiterate what @artskids and @IfYouOnlyKnew have already said. My D has been assured that V. Bussert is not leaving. For what it’s worth- this rumor seems to bubble up every few years, and I have heard Vicky dispel it to entire room of prospective parents on more than one occasion. Don’t know who starts it, or who it benefits.
@kategrizz Glad to hear it. I am very much a proponent of accurate info and since I do (on occasion) help guide some students through this process- I want to make sure I am giving them correct info, hence the question in the first place. Thanks all!
D auditioned for Muhlenberg performing arts scholarship back on Jan. 23rd. Never heard another word from the college or the Theater Dept. until a letter arrived in yesterday’s mail offering her a substantial scholarship. She’s very happy with her current choice and won’t be changing. But what’s up with sending this so late without even a call or email?
There was a story in the Times about late offers and scholarship offers. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/24/your-money/when-colleges-dangle-money-to-lure-students-who-ignored-them.html?mcubz=1&_r=0
