@marg928 sounds to me like your D made the right choice re the musical. My D also submitted a few last minute things last night: One final prescreen and 2 Honors apps!
we are also in the group that has the school
spring musical in April. Hope D has an idea of where she’s going then so she can just enjoy the show. We also had the same sorta problem as you did @marg928 that the musical was supposed to be another one that D LOVED & the rights couldn’t be had so they chose their like third choice and it’s my daughters least fav show by far. So disappointed. She’s still in it and has already been cast as a female lead but still not happy about it . I think the kids get so pumped for senior year and for some MT kids it tends to be a let down and with all the added stress of auditions it’s a train wreck. My D is not happy with school right now and it makes me sad but we told her to just look forward to starting a new chapter in college & try to enjoy senior year anyway since you only get it once!
My D’s senior musical - Suessical, was in terms of the actual show, my least favorite thing she did in HS. Sorry to anyone who loves it, but I hated it then, still hate it now.
Does anyone know how Elon and Emerson will get to the applicants about decisions?
So U Michigan is due today and my D is so burnt writing essays she’s considering dropping it from the list. Thoughts? We have never set foot into Michigan so we really have no idea if it would even be a fit for her. Thoughts? If anyone knows a lot about the program I would love to hear why she should get it done!
It is considered a top program. They get a very talented class and academics are part of admission there. It is very competitive to get in. Ann Arbor is a great college town. Michigan gets COLD though.
Betting you know all that already.
If it is due today and she is burned out and has a list she is happy with maybe leave it off. One of many decisions to come. If she will regret not applying - that is different.
The campus is beautiful! To pass the prescreen you have to academically qualified. Can’t answer why you should or shouldn’t apply. We visited about half the schools prior to applying. On the otherhand she won’t miss something she hasn’t seen.
@marg928 I agree with @bfahopeful . The program is top notch and represented here on CC - others can chime in with personal experiences. They have had some transition with their program head; I am not up to speed on the replacement. It is a difficult admit given the dual academics + audition. The facilities are gorgeous and if your daughter likes the idea of Big 10 sports - Michigan certainly has it! As I recall, the difficult part of the Michigan app was getting the prescreen just right; the auditors are very particular. Did she shoot her prescreen?
The cold definitely doesn’t thrill me…and she already applied to Minnesota another cold place! I was thinking maybe she could try to do a walk in at Unifieds instead. Academically I don’t know if she would get in. She’s a very good student but the SAT scores I hear on this message board are just so above and beyond she’s not even close to those kinds of numbers. I guess I will look up and see what their average SAT score is.
um…what pre-screen??? I’ve been on their website a few times and there’s no mention of that!
Michigan is one of the true “lottery schools” with MT admissions in the low single-digits (by my count, using the available data here on CC, the acceptance rate is about 8%, which is going to be biased something like 2x-3x high). Their audition pool is one of the broadest and deepest in the country, in part because they have put many actors on Broadway - look at any Playbill and chances are that you find one or more Michigan grads in the show. Looking at some of the available videos from students that in the program, the level of talent is pretty impressive. Most of the kids look like Young Arts Finalist-level actors. I think many experts would put UM up there with CMU and CCM as three of the top programs in the country.
Be aware that while academics are a big factor in passing the prescreen, it may be that the academic bar for talented MT students is a tad lower than for other disciplines.
I am now wondering if @marg928 means the acting program and not MT. Those are two different things at Michigan. Not much is said about the acting program. MT is the thing at Michigan and what they are known for in terms of theatre. As said above - a lottery school for MT. The acting program is probably wonderful but is not at that “lottery” level from what I know.
If she is straight acting I say drop it and focus on her other schools.
Michigan does go to unifieds for acting but I have no idea if they take walk ins.
I think her D is primarily acting bfa. @marg928 if I recall your D just needs to submit a short recording for acting bfa. Talking about her reasons for wanting to attend…something like that. Nothing fancy you can do it from a cell phone with good lighting. My D did it herself. We know 2 kids in the acting program and they really love it…and yes…so cold!
on u mich the prescreen was due today not the application? My daughter applied thru decision desk but application is due feb 1st and I correct?
just looked u mich everything due today ugh guess shes up all night finishing up the common application. Also the requirements for a freshman is 3.0 a/b for the musical theater program I guess they look at these kids a little different than the general applicant.
Yes my D is straight acting BFA. I finally found the “prescreen” info and when I logged into the Decision Desk I saw that I had started the application on 10/1! I didn’t remember that at all! At that point I saw that they wanted the short video which seemed simple enough but my D was on edge at that point and got mad and said she wasn’t doing it and went to bed…LOL I guess that’s that! Oh well, I would rather visit her somewhere warm!
I’m glad I said something @lincoln56 at least it helped you out!
I have no idea why I bring this up every time MT at U of M is mentioned - I can’t stop myself; it’s a character flaw.
But … Madonna’s daughter Lola is a MT major there.
Lola WAS an MT major at UM for two years. Our intel from a student (good friend of my S), who is in the same entering class, says Lola is now a Dance major at SUNY Purchase.
