@Ducky312 Where were the two acceptances from? Thanks!
@marg928 we have an exceptionally talented friend who ended up with fewer offers than anticipated and an Acting deferral at Ithaca. As @Ducky312 suggested, perhaps before you write it off as an option…peek at some of the Ithaca threads. The programs are fully integrated except for voice lessons, and both are required to auditions for all plays and musicals. Our friend accepted the Acting offer, loves Ithaca and is attending her semester in London now - having the time of her life! Might be one to keep in your back pocket? Hopefully the next set of decisions will all be YES! Best of luck
@Divamamacita 's beautiful D is at Ball State … tagging her here so she might come on in and answer.
I know LOTS of kids that go to Ball State - some in the theatre department, some not - but they all love it.
@marg928 … hang in there!! My D had a rough go of it w/ prescreens & auditions. She’s a very happy 2nd year BFA MT right now who ADORES her school.
I remember all too well getting the bad news first and having to share it with my D … it sucks, there’s no way around it. But I’m thinking good thoughts for you two!! :-bd
@Ducky312 @deelight you’re right. I haven’t told my D yet about the prescreen rejection but I’ll talk to her tomorrow and if she wants to interview then so be it. I had my doubts about Ithaca anyway, just because of the location. We are in NJ and a drive 4 hours north really didn’t thrill me. I’m really not panicking yet…she applied to 17 schools already and there are a few more that are almost done. That includes four UC schools that are long shots anyway because she’s OOS. So far she has seven auditions lined up for Unifieds and the week after. I just have to wonder if this had anything to do with the way her prescreen was filmed. She didn’t do what she was supposed to…she was told to do a 60 second and 90 second version of both her monologues. She taped it with her local acting teacher and she wouldn’t let me in the room because she won’t act in front of me. So I sat in the hallway for an hour and a half and never got to go in to make sure everything was done correctly. When I put the card in my computer I flipped my lid! She did her entire monologues and I had to try to cut them to 60 and 90 seconds! I was so angry but she couldn’t redo them so I did my best and sent them. The next day she lost her voice anyway and she was going to Ecuador for 11 days shortly after that so what could I do? Now I will always wonder if that had any affect on the decisions.
@marg928…sorry to hear about Ithaca. I am sure your daughter is disappointed but can now move on to opportunities more fit for her. I am assuming your D is at Middletown South??? We are almost neighbors. Funny to read your posts because my S school is doing Legally Blonde this Spring and they did Producers two years ago…must be a Monmouth County thing! Lol PS…he is not auditioning…too busy! BAL to your daughter!
@cpx4gb Did you get regular mail from Ithaca for prescreen results or for regular admission decision? Did she pass/accepted? When did you send in prescreens? Thanks for the info.
@Mel2421 I sent you a message.
@marg928 - my memory/knowledge of the BA theater studies program at Ithaca was that it was NOT well connected to the BFA programs. My D passed the prescreen 3 years ago, but was not accepted to the BFA program, and in her rejection was a similar offer to interview etc… and they made a point of saying that it was separate from BFA classes. Another of her friends did take them up on the offer to interview, ended up choosing BA at Ithaca, but only stayed for a semester.
@nodaybut2daymom OMG that’s too funny…so much for anonymity LOL. What school is your S at? Or you can PM me.
@toowonderful Thanks for correcting!! Our friend was deferred to BFA acting, @marg928 did say BA, sorry for any confusion!
@deelight my daughter applied to BFA Acting she is not MT
@marg928 - fair warning, Ithaca was one of the schools that kept pestering to apply for another major (completely in theater related) after the rejection- a practice I found REALLY annoying
Most auditions at the U are asking for the same songs that you song on your pre screen.
Deferrals to other programs made me think - D’s year (she is a senior now) I vividly remember D talking about her friend’s “acceptance” to a program, and later realizing it wasn’t the BFA program, it was a deferral to Theatre Studies. Some schools have good TS programs and allow all students to audition for shows, and some do not. Also, some will allow TS students to re-audition for the BFA program. Research the individual program to be sure.
Any recommendations on “Safety” schools that are still open to apply? I believe we made the mistake of applying to 18 dream/reach schools and not one safety. My D is strong in voice, dance, and acting and applied to all the big schools to be challenged. We are in Texas.
@shanaboo university of Alabama and University of San Diego are two my D has applied to. USD is due this week. Also Flagler in FL we were considering…
@shanaboo We are in Texas too. Do you know anything about the MT new program at Texas Tech?
@shanaboo Last year, my daughter applied to North Central College (Naperville, IL, outside of Chicago) in January and they welcomed her application, gave her both a substantial academic merit scholarship and an artistic scholarship based on a video audition. This is a non-audition BA program that offers both MT and straight theatre options. They offer many performance opportunities and are serious about helping their students make professional connections. We visited while we were in town for Chicago Unifieds and she had a personalized tour with a student guide from the theatre department. She left feeling great about North Central as an option, and had she not received BFA offers, she would have been happy to attend. In fact, had she known about North Central earlier, she probably would have shortened her BFA application/audition list by three or four.
If I recall correctly, Texas Tech only takes @10-14 students in MT…so not considered a safety.
