wow good for her @Mel2421. This teacher is a great choreographer though and she won the choreography award for our last musical (Basie Awards in NJ). @lovetoact @CTDramaMom Interesting about Legally Blonde. I have no explanation for this! It is what it is now though…she’s auditioning and we shall see! I’m just happy they’re going to be understanding if she has to miss practices.
My kids’ PA HS uses student choreographers from time to time, and the HS uses students as assistant choreographers. In fact, my S choreographed shows at is PA HS (and continues to choreograph HS shows) and choreo has been quite good. At least in our case, where the student is doing the choreography, the director was not getting paid a separate choreo stipend. My S now get a stipend now for choreographing HS shows. As for what is in it for the student - he or she will get choregraphy credits (or production team credit) and will possibly start to build ways to work when not on stage.
As for pay and HS shows… migrant workers get more $$ than arts supplementals provide. I did the math one time and figure out that I was making about $3.25 an hour when factoring in scheduled rehearsals alone…so I stopped doing the math.
I guess this is no longer an issue, since she decided not to audition, (or is she? Just saw the new post) but our high school director had announced for spring play it was going to be "Peter and the Star catcher. It is a very male heavy show I hear, but he had announced that he was going to make it gender-neutral. All people would be considered for all parts! I think something happened with the rights, they are no longer doing it. But would they consider that ? Not sure how it would work…
Gender neutral is more and more common. At my D’s high school, they are doing Joseph… dreamcoat this year, I saw the cast list yesterday, and all the brothers but one that I noticed are being played by girls. My own daughter just finished a gender neutral production of Titus Andronicus at Rada- she played Titus and a guy played Tamora (the female lead).
@musicmama123 she decided to audition LOL
Strange. There are LOTS of great dance numbers in Legally Blonde and it is more a female cast than male or at ;east balanced. Oh well, glad it worked out for you.
Oh boy the email from Ithaca came this morning and I just saw it. It was a no. I haven’t even told my D yet. This is the second no. I really don’t know what to make of this. Her MTCA coach tells me she’s very talented and should audition for Juilliard and she gets rejected from two prescreens! They offered her an interview for their BA instead…no thanks!
@marg928 I’m so sorry. Rejections are incredibly difficult when you are putting forth so much effort. I don’t know your daughter, but please know the place that’s the right fit for her will grab her up. She has a perfect college match out there. This was not it…and besides Ithaca is sooooo Cold!
re: “Ithaca divides their prescreens by last name and assigns several different teachers a group.” - I wonder if there are variances in their notification as well (?). We didn’t get email notification but got regular mail notification.
@cpx4gb our notification was a message on Accept’d
Break legs to her, @marg928!
Hey is anyone auditioning @ ball state ? We have considered adding this school and need to make a decision soon. There’s only one on campus audition date that would work. I ran the net price calculator and it came back with no aid whatsoever …so info from anyone about aid at that school?
I don’t have the info you are looking for @theaterwork but just read today about Sutton Foster directing Shrek the Musical at Ball State
@marg928 so sorry about Ithaca we visited them this summer. D and I decided that we wouldn’t be submitting to Ithaca. Getting in is so hard and it is so far away from us. My d has had 3 rejections and they are tough. We are still waiting to here from 11 schools. She auditioned for 14 schools at Moonifieds. Good luck to your kiddo!
@cpx4gb I know I just saw that too about Sutton!
I just don’t know much about that school. I know Sutton got an honorary degree from them.
@Mel2421 is that regular auditions @ moonifieds or prescreens? Are the rejections prescreen auditions? Just wondering how that works?
@theaterwork Some were prescreens most were final auditions.
@theaterwork Ball State has something called the Whitinger Scholars program that offers 10 ‘exceptional talented’ students full tuition scholarships. It’s an honors college program, so it’s academic and talent based. Details should be on their website. They are also a part of the Midwest Student Exchange Program, which gets kids from specific states close to in-state tuition. My D did not qualify for the honors program, but with MSEP and another grant/scholarship she was offered it was the best financial package we saw. The relationship with Sutton Foster is strong, and Bill Jenkins is very impressive, and I expect that program to continue to grow & flourish. They have taken a unique approach to showcase…if I remember correctly…with Chicago, LA and New York connections to present graduate talent in the market where they have the best opportunity for success. Hopefully, someone with a current student can chime in with more details (or will correct me if I’m off…a year later, the details are starting to blur!)
Our experience was very positive, just not the right fit for our D.
@marg928 it is so competitive out there I don’t know if I would say no thank you to an interview for a BA. We were offered two different deferrals into two other types of programs. It’s something. Ultimately out of 11 schools we only got two acceptances for BFA MT last year. Hang in there. It’s a long time until April when you might be getting your final acceptances.
