@sunshinestateg My friend was a finalist last year for the University Scholars Program in Medicine. She said there were about 20 finalists, 5 of which eventually were selected for the program (she was not one of the five). It’s odd to me that WashU did not send you an email of regret, as they do with other scholarship programs.
I would argue that stressful and competitive are two very different things! Students are not competitive with each other; everyone wants everyone else to succeed, which makes for some great study sessions and homework collaboration groups. I would say a lot of students, myself included, generally function at a medium level of stress at all times, though. For me and for many students, we perform best this way and feel most fulfilled when at our limits. I don’t find the overall environment stiflingly stressful, though; stress usually comes from individual expectation, not group pressure.
For context, I’m a BME major and a music minor. I’m considering additional minors in EE, CSE, and bioinformatics.
@sunshinestateg That’s weird that you didn’t get an email (maybe in spam or trash). I applied for the University Scholars Program and wasn’t selected as a finalist. I got an email on February 22nd notifying me of this update.
@musicmeister22 Thank you. It is weird but did not get. Do you know how many people apply
? My dd was very disappointed. Had high level research experience and great stats. Oh well. Im sure it was very competitive.
@sunshinestateg Of course! I’m not sure exactly… I looked it up but I don’t think they have released that information. All they said in the email was the basic, “thanks for applying - finalist have been notified - this decision won’t affect your overall decision.” I’m sure it is a very competitive program though. I’m sorry she didn’t make the cut, but with her amazing experience I’m sure she’ll get into a program/school that she’ll thrive at! After all, college decisions aren’t everything! Good Luck!
I’d be very interested to know from each of the members of this thread which school still on your list either 1) to which you have already been admitted or 2) from which you’re waiting to hear is your ideal first choice. Thanks.
@GTDad Admitted:
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
University of Wisconsin-Madison
College of William and Mary
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Waiting to hear from:

DD had listed 4 AP Exams/Tests to be taken in Common Application. But now she wants to skip 2 of them after she found out she may not get college credits for them (AP English Lit and AP Macroeconomics). Would that be ok with colleges? OR would college rescind her admission if she skips taking tests listed in the application? This is our first experience with college admission process, so we are worried. Appreciate your help, thanks!
@cc4help Don’t worry. Any offer of admission, or admission itself, is not conditional upon sitting in standardized exams as listed as anticipated on the application form. Colleges do not rescind offers because of AP exams; they do, however, if the 12th grade transcript shows grades way worse than expected.
