As a Mom, I am very excited about the possibilities for my D at Pitt, so I am really ok if it’s her only acceptance from here on out. And I’m serious. I do think she’d love to be accepted at all of her schools because she loves the programs she’s applied to. Then see how the FA turns out. Best of luck to everyone.
Not saying that I am not a part of the problem, but I totally agree with @JohnGaltIII. The maximum number of schools on CommonApp and other application systems should be decreased from 20 to 10 or less.

I think the problem will persist as long as funding for higher education continues to decrease for state schools. Also, you can’t discount the fact that admissions continues to show itself as a crap-shoot. Students are doing what they can to give themselves the best chance and opportunity.
Oh and so far my son has been accepted to Colorado College, Rhodes College, and state schools.
Kids apply to more and more colleges due to a simple fact that admission outcome is unpredictable. Sure many of us have experienced that college you had expected didn’t admit and the one you thought had less chances welcomes you with open arms. My fingers are crossed and would report colleges once picture is little bit more clear for us. I would admit that direct-med/scholar hope for us at this point is left to only one college admission decision, all others are traditional route.
If you’re willing to pay app fees and do the work for the applications, I don’t see the issue in applying to as many as possible. I’ve been working all my life for this moment. I want to see where I stand with these schools.
Hey All, does anyone know how hard it is to get accepted as a danforth scholar? I went to washu for a summer program and even interviewed on- campus, so I thought I would have a good chance at it, but I was just wondering if anybody knew the stats of danforth scholars.
@PPofEngrDr But the more schools to which folks apply, the more self fulfilling the prophecy of unpredictable admissions presents itself. You are GUARANTEEING that it will be a dice role or pure numbers more than a holistic review when everyone applies to ten plus schools.
I am of the opinion that if you are intelligent enough to get into an elite school you are also intelligent enough to get a list down to the ones you really want to or would attend if accepted and I doubt that is above 5 or 6 for most folks. I honestly wish colleges got the list of every school someone applied to so they could see who really wanted to get in and who just wanted to see if they could get in. The abundance of apps only guarantees a less holistic review.
@JohnGaltIII I think you are tilting at windmills complaining about students applying to too many colleges. They are playing the admissions game the way it is set up today. If most of the strong applicants are applying to multiple schools then to compete they must do the same.
honestly, I would attend every single college I applied to – it’s so difficult to know whether or not you’re going to get in, especially for someone like me who doesn’t have a 4.0 and doesn’t have insane extracurriculars or 22 ap classes – I applied a wide range of places I would actually go to and if I get into even half of them I will have a very hard time deciding where to go
