Please post inquiries, discussions etc about 2023 Owl Days here rather than in the RD or ED threads.
@Houston1021 Thanks to create this threads. I have a quick question: do we need to bring sleeping bag to the owl day? Thanks
@jinl11 Yes, the instructions say you should bring a sleeping bag, towel, personal items. https://riceadmission.rice.edu/documents/odad/2019_Owl_Days_Overnight_Participant_Guide.pdf
As far as supplies are concerned, assume that your host student is just providing a place to sleep. My daughter forgot to bring a towel, and she was lucky that her host had an extra one! My daughter also brought an old pair of flip flops for the shower - each residential college has a different set up and some of them have shared floor bathrooms/showers.
@TexasMom2000 @Faulkner1897 Thank you so much for the info.
Here is a video from Class of 2021 Owl Days in 2017. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAkOAxDMhm4. @Faulkner1897 will probably post the one from last year.
Here is the video from last year’s Owl Days - 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1OQQb671xA&feature=youtu.be
Does anyone have owl day detailed schedule from previous year.
The schedule usually is pretty much the same from year to year. However this year Owl Days is 2 days rather than 3 so the schedule from last year would be less helpful. Here is this year’s. https://admission.rice.edu/sites/g/files/bxs676/f/ScheduleAtAGlance_OwlDays2019_4.pdf
Last year’s schedule won’t map to this year’s since Owl Days was Wednesday-Friday last year
Please be aware that you may be sleeping on the floor in a dorm room or on a couch/futon if the dorm is suite style. Bring a comfortable sleeping bag and pillow.
Hi. My son was accepted ED. I have heard about Owl Days only by being on these threads. Was he supposed to receive an email with information about it? I have seen the links to the information on here, but I’m wondering how people were notified.
Maybe @awesomepolyglot who was also a 2023 ED admit can answer. Your son can email admittedowls@rice.edu or call 713-348-7423 and ask if there was an email or mailer. Maybe it went into his spam folder.
I was admitted ED for CO2023 and I got an email for Owl Days, I think shortly after the RD results came out. @swirls321
To all attending Owl Days on 4/11 and 4/12 I hope you have a great experience at Rice. Please post any questions, reactions, etc. here.
D19 is there now and will be staying with her host in Lovett tonight. She had not visited Rice before (much less TX), so this is a great opportunity. So far, so good. She attended a class with 35 students. She was hoping for a smaller class size, but that might just be a function of the classes available to visit. The prof seemed good and the students friendly. She felt right at home with the level of discourse. She plans to attend two more classes tomorrow. She went to the club fair and saw some things that looked fun, including marching (actually a ‘scatter’) band. She thought the Baker Institute sounded very interesting but opportunities for undergrad internships seem limited. She met up last night with eight admitted students she met in the group chat and they were - in a word - chill. I’m really glad she’s taking advantage of all these things so she can make the best decision possible.
Lovett is referred to as The Toaster because the architecture of the dorm resembles one. My daughter stayed there when she was a prospective student and found the residents to be very welcoming. She is now in classes and friends with the girl that was her host. The Rice Marching Owl Band (“MOB”) is a fun group that has a lot of Rice spirit and a great sense of humor. One of my daughter’s friends is the leader of the MOB percussion section. https://mob.rice.edu
