Class of 2023 record numbers

It looks like the class of 2023 is going to be large. My daughter got notification today that her room swap window that was set to begin next week is not happening. In order to manage the waitlist of first year students - staff is “managing the existing inventory” and assigning the remaining room spaces.

I’ve also heard that they have told students who live 200 miles away but applied for housing after the priority date will probably not receive on campus housing. It definitely is getting more important getting that housing application in earlier.

I have a college friend that has a son heading to UTD. He is on the waitlist. I think they are Dallas area ish. Parents that have attended orientation already recall hearing at least 4,000 freshmen with 750 incoming into computer science alone.

Wow!! I would think they would need to cap CS soon. They already had a huge program at 600 to 650.

I started a facebook group for parents of kids from our HS going to UTD this fall. None of the 20+ have my daughter’s major. Somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 are CS. (Granted their high school population, particularly the top performer is very STEM/STEAM and robotics driven).

UTD is different that they do not restrict the number of students that can major in CS as entering freshman. They just keep adding sections of classes. I think they are getting close to physical capacity. They have classes at night and on Saturday. They are restricting transfers into the degree though.

I am worried about my daughter being able to get into CS classes if she only plans on getting a minor.

I’m really going to be interested in how large the Class of 2023 is.

Do you how many 1st year beds are available @GTAustin ? I haven’t been able to get a clear number.

I just got a message from one of my college friends. She says she lives over 4 hours away and everyone from their HS had been denied housing. The 20 or so people from our HS have housing.

I have no idea when people applied (my daughter did back in Feb. and got her LLC).

While growth is never easy - I am happy that more and more kids are turning to UTD as a full/on campus experience.

I don’t know anything about that @ebh87 - but I do know that students really, really need to watch their UTD account. One of the incoming freshmen from our HS that has registered at orientation already had notification of a class schedule change. They had to pick a new english section for some reason.

@ebh87, that is a legitimate worry. I spoke with my daughter last weekend and she reiterated that she was glad she started in CS and then switched out to cognitive science. She has not been able to get into a computer science class since. I would consider starting in computer science and get those credits done, using your electives in the courses for your major and then transfer.

We live in Houston and my dd (16) was notified that she will not have housing. Not sure what to do. Any thoughts?

@BlueBayouAZ, I found an article dated 8/2018 that there was 2200 spaces in the dorms. If there is 4000 freshman, a little over half will have a space. Its becoming like UT and A&M, you need to apply for housing in the fall. At least at UTD, you will know if you have been accepted to the school and to your major vs UT, where you have to wait until Feb. or March but apply for housing when you send your application in.

Yikes @momtomany05 - I’m curious, when did she apply for housing? I would try reaching out to housing again - stressing your daughter’s age (You mean she is 16 and didn’t graduate in 2016, right?). Maybe approach the admissions counselor for your region and any department contact you have. Sixteen is really young not to be on campus.

I found this link on the UTD page. It comes with this warning “By providing this link, UT Dallas does not guarantee the quality, performance, completeness or accuracy of the information provided in the database or by the database’s host, Off Campus Partners, LLC. I agree with @BlueBayouAZ, if your daughter is 16, definitely talk to housing. If she is older, 18 or so, look for apartment or a house. There are a lot of reviews on the UTD reddit page of good apartments or people looking for roommates. They also mention numerous websites for housing and roommates.

Is housint guaranteed for honors college students?

I think so. They have a limit on the number of students admitted to honors, so I think if you get into honors, you would have housing.

@BlueBayouAZ Thank you for that information. My dd is 16 yrs old and she applied for housing in April shortly after deadline because she was waiting to be admitted off the waitlist at Vanderbilt. She was admitted to Vandy but because of cost she had to give up her spot. UTD became a last resort type of situation.

We just came from orientation and apparently there are 500 freshman students on the waitlist for housing. And even though they say there are no guarantees for housing unless you are honors, the VP of housing said that he was pretty positive that housing would open up after students later in the summer. Having my dd stay off campus would impose all kinds of issues we rather not deal with as an incoming freshman.

Edit: housing would open up later in the summer after some students cancel housing plans.

One of my college friends has a incoming freshman on the waitlist. Apparently they know several others. What is strange is all the kids from my daughter’s HS have spots. They must have committed earlier like we did (Early Feb). Oh but come to think of it everyone we know (except my daughter) is honors or NMF.

Are NMFs guaranteed on campus housing all four years?
