Hi guys, I’m looking into what to take as an incoming freshmen as a chemical engineering major. Here is what I was thinking so far:

BIS 2A (first semester bio is required for my degree)
MAT 21B/21C (depends on my Calc BC score)
2 GEs (not sure which ones)

I plan to skip CHEM 2A in the fall since I got a 5 on the AP Exam. Also, I’m not sure if I’m required to take an English or not since I passed the AP Comp exam with a 4. Help would be greatly appreciated!

As far as GEs go, you’ll want to be taking classes in the social sciences and arts/humanities categories because your major classes will fulfill science/engineering requirements. I would recommend only doing one GE your first quarter; stay between 13 and 15 units. You can have a heavier load in later quarters once you’ve adjusted to the university.

I would personally recommend ANT 2 (cultural anthropology), as it counts towards SS and can count towards several core literacy requirements. This was what I took as a GE fall quarter. Note though that each class can only count towards one topical breadth and one core literacy.

Another good GE is any of the RST 1 classes, which count toward AH and multiple literacies as well. They each focus on a different aspect of religious studies, though you’ll have to see which ones are being offered in a particular quarter. I took RST 1F (“religion today” officially, though with Elmore it focuses more on the definition of religion) this past spring and loved it.

If you want to take two classes rather than one class, I’d highly recommend that you take a freshman seminar as your second class.

As far as your AP Comp score, I’m not sure how that works for the College of Engineering. I know in Letters and Science that exempts you from having to take a lower division composition course. Talk to your orientation leader about that.

If the two GEs I’ve mentioned don’t sound interesting to you, check off some GE requirements to search for on the class search tool and see what classes sound interesting.

I am an Aerospace Engineer. For the English, you can skip a writing class; however, if you want to go to grad school, most require that you take one regardless. Plus some are cool (if you like reading/writing) anyway; I took COM 2 and loved it.

As for GEs, I +1 the previous poster about RST classes. I took RST 1C (Sacrifice in religion) my first quarter and it was awesome. Learned a lot and was an easy A. Other GEs I’ve taken just so you can see:

History 17A - Easy if you took AP US, wasn’t bad
Philosophy 1 - HATED IT
Economics 1A - Not bad, was interesting.

By the way, the orientation leaders might recommend astronomy or something. DO NOT TAKE A SCIENCE GE! It is a waste of time because you are a science major and it counts for nothing. You will already have a tight schedule as a chemical engineer anyway.

Good luck!
