Class visits

How are they accomplished? I know this may seem weird, but I've never done one before. Do you just walk in and sit there and watch? Should you meet with the prof first? Do you have to tell them you're coming days in advance? Help!

Bump.....anyone?

It would probably be polite if you notified the professor :) If you're sitting in on a class during SOC, I'm pretty sure the admissions office will get you signed up. If you're visiting on your own, talk to the professor (email or phone) and make sure that A) they're okay with visitors and B) the session is one that is representative of the course (ie, not an exam). Oh, and make sure you know when/where the class is held :P

If nothing else, you'll probably throw the professor and all of the students for a loop if you just show up.

Yes, I was worried about SOC. So, do I have to worry about signing myself up beforehand or will that be something to take care of when I get there? Maybe I should have worried about this before now...

Two years ago, when I was at SOC, they had pre-chosen about 15 classes that students could sign up to sit in on. Then you just went. Although I got the impression that the instructors weren't notified that people would be sitting in.

Thanks, WendyMouse!

Are you expected to actively participate in any discussions going on in class, or are you just observing?

All is taken care of...I took the initiative and e-mailed the professors of the classes I wanted to visit. One e-mailed me back within an hour! I see that as a good sign.

When I visited classes a week or so ago, I just walked in the class without notifying the professor beforehand and asked them if it would be okay once they had arrived. I introduced myself as an accepted student. Fortunately, they were all very willing to share their class and students with me! ;-D

LisaG>I have same question!! I wonder if we are encouraged to be a part of discussions (I hope not...)

I just visited Wellesley--in the Admissions building, they have lists of classes and times they meet, and you can take any you'd like within that book. You don't have to notify the professor beforehand, though they do want you to sort of mention it to him/her before the class starts (like, when you walk in the door and people are sitting down). There were no particular rules on whether or not you may/may not participate, I talked in one and not the other and it was all cool, so don't stress.

i just emailed a couple of profs...hopefully they check their emails on friday evenings...hahah...hhhmmm....
