classes/supplies

hey guys this may seem like a silly question but i kno in hs teachers are like ok for my class you need this number of notebooks, folders, etc...do classes have required material like that or can we bring n e thing we want? thanx

they could care less what you bring.. haha.

a fivestar 5 subject notebook for each semester does it for me.

no need for tons and tons of notebooks and binders.

do you guys bring your laptops to class?

Depends.

sometimes teachers will put up slides and notes on ctools (you'll get familar with that) and i dl them and bring my laptop to class. I type faster than I write and my handwritting is terrible. but its still a hassle to bring sometimes.

I just buy a notebook for each of my class and just use that for the entire semester and toss it at the end.

Hardly anybody ever takes laptops to class.

Generally I have a folder for each class to hold handouts, assignments, etc. I also have a few notebooks, depending on the classes I'm taking. If you want to be more organized, you can get binders. I've learned that for most classes, I just don't take notes. I'd say I took less than 20 pages of notes combined for Great Books, History 210, Physics 340, Physics 401, Math 512, and Econ 101. However, Math 395 and Math 396 each required over 100 pages of notes each.

thanks, that's good to know. Do any teachers require that you bring the text book with you to class or is it all outside reading?

most is outside reading.. but it all depends on the teacher.

Hey dilksy, how was History 210? I was thinking of taking it next year. I'm somewhat interested in history so I don't want to take it if it's a blow off class.

It wasn't that bad of a class, but I think a lot of it depends on who's teaching. Our professor was so into the subject most of us suspected drug use, and my GSI was awesome. My GSI was finishing his dissertation on the stuff the first half of the class covered, and the professor's specialty was the stuff covered in the second half, so they knew their stuff. We had a lot of reading, but they said they were going to cut it back for future classes. Also, it was an R&E class when I took it, so the emphasis was usually on cultural identity. I don't think it would be a bad choice, but it does have the potential to be real boring, and there are probably better classes you could take (unless you have an interest in barbarians/decline of the Roman Empire).

not to beat the whole laptop subject to death or anything, but do professors/students ever get ****ed when someone is incessantly typing notes while they're trying to lecture/listen?

Tablet PC?

And whoa...that five-subject notebook thing would be useful...I've always been a 5 binders person.

Samwise, I'm taking History 210 this fall (future history major), and I heard that it'll be a good class. This semester, the main professor will be Paolo Squatriti. I don't think he was teaching last year. However, a friend of mine had this professor as an advisor while he was writing his thesis before he graduated from Michigan. A few weeks ago, I asked my friend about him as I knew I'd be able to get a straight answer, and this is what I learned. Professor Squatriti is a good lecturer and a fair grader. His tests are also fair so if one studies and does the readings, he/she should do well. However, I was warned that he can be "cold," but that information didn't bother me as I knew that I would be entertained in class and receive a final grade that I deserved. I hope this helps! :)

Diezel2155, professors and students won't get ****ed if someone uses a laptop. However, it can sometimes be annoying.

Thanks for the 210 info. Turns out I have a conflict on Tuesday no matter how I arrange it, so I won't be able to take it this year. I'm currently signed up for History 318 but I'm not sure if it's going to be such a great class. There is a class on the American revolution that looks really good (462 I think), but that won't fit either. You should check that out if you have room.

And for anyone taking great books, if you're reading the daily in class don't hold it up in front of your face, the man is easily insulted. lol

i also wanted to kno bout the science classes specifically like with labs n stuff...

You usually need a lab notebook and manual, though for some labs the latter is included free of charge.
