Clemson acceptance question (dealing with provisional acceptance)

has anybody else here who received a provisional acceptance to Clemson after sending SAT scores and who has applied there already not heard back about your admissions decision yet? I haven't heard back yet, even though I finished my application like 3 months ago. Is that bad? How long have you guys been waiting to hear back?

My daughter’s acceptance letter arrived within a few weeks of her applying. Is you GPA a little low or maybe your class rank? The explanation could be that eyebrows were raised if your transcripts didn’t cut their muster, whatever that might be. Or, maybe they haven’t received your transcripts? Have you called them to see if something that was supposed to arrive didn’t?

i’m in the same situation as the OP. I was given provisional acceptance in March of this year (my junior year). i submitted my application two months ago…still haven’t heard back.

I know some people who got provisional acceptance really early (in october) and some people who are just getting their acceptances so they may be coming out slowly. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

k so I got my provisional acceptance June 1st after I received my May SAT scores. I was surprised because I had no idea that any schools did that kind of stuff. And I finished my application by like the end of August. When I took the SAT the first time I got a 1930. I got 770 Math, 610 Writing, and 550 Critical Reading. I recently took them again in October and had them send my scores to Clemson. When I took them that time I improved to a 2060. I had a 750 Math, 670 Writing, and 640 Critical Reading. So that combines to a 2080 (770 Math, 670 Writing, 640 Critical Reading). My GPA is pretty good. I have like a 3.9 unweighted and a 4.15 weighted on a 4.0 scale. I have taken all Honors and APs. My class rank is 6th out of 493. I also sent them my Math 2 and Chemistry SAT II scores. I got an 800 Math 2 and 710 Chemistry. I am in many extracurricular activities. I called them recently like last week because I was worrying if they maybe had not received everything. They said that my application was complete. So it’s been completed for a while now because my guidance counselor mailed out my transcript to all my schools I’m applying to in like September. Oh and I’m OOS. I live in NH. Any ideas?

oh and i got a 33 ACT with a 35 Math, 31 English, 32 Reading, and 32 Science

oh and i got a 8 on my essay for SAT first time i took it and on the ACT and a 9 on the essay on my second SAT. and i took the ACT in September and the 2 SAT Subject Tests in June.

Maybe it would be best if you called admissions after the holiday and ask them specifically about this.

alright thank you proudmom. if you don’t mind me asking, what were your daughter’s stats as far as test scores, GPA, class rank, and all of that stuff? and what state are you guys from? and sportsguy, what are your stats so I can have someone to compare to who is in the same situation as me.

I hope you have a Great Thanksgiving and that you will receive your acceptance soon.

Here are my daughter’s scores: GPA - 4.0 UW 5.08 W at the end of junior year, top 1% of her class, full IB curriculum, 1520/2320 SAT (NMSF), varsity athlete all four years, small-time entrepreneur (designs and maintains websites for a few small businesses), volunteers a lot (started a reading group for 3-5th grade kids at a local after school program and sings in a contemporary church group), heavily involved with school’s drama department and associated productions, member or officer of three honor societies, president of school’s Web Design Club, but if she had it her way she would spend ALL of her time with her boyfriend. :)

thank you proud_mom. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

and wow those are really good stats!!! you must really be proud of her!!! is Clemson her #1 school? and did she receive any scholarship offers yet such as the OOS tuition waiver if you are from out of state? and yea for my school, any AP classes you take, you get a 4.6 for an A, a 4.3 for an A-, and a 4.0 for a B+. Honors classes get 4.3 for an A, 4.0 for an A- and 3.7 for a B+. Regular classes earn 4.0 for an A, 3.7 for an A-, and I think 3.4 or 3.3 for B+. you can only start taking AP classes once you get to junior year. So last year, I took AP Calc 1 and AP Calc AB. I got an A in both and a 5 on the AP test. this year I am taking AP Chem 1 and 2, AP Stats 1 and 2, and AP Calc BC for my AP classes. I have only received one B+ all of high school, and that was freshman year, in Honors English 9. I have gotten like 6 or 7 A-'s and the rest are all A’s. for my EC’s, I am the President/Treasurer of FBLA this year (have been a member since sophomore year) and have gone to 3 Fall Leadership Workshops for it, 2 State Leadership Conferences so far, and 2 National Leadership Conferences (in Atlanta, GA summer after soph year, and Anaheim, CA, summer after junior year). I plan on going to the SLC and NLC again this year (NLC is in Nashville, TN). I am in Key Club, Math Team, National Honor Society, and Class Council. I have over 175 hours of community service so far for high school. this year I joined Christians in Action and the swim team. I also do community service through my youth group at my church.

so the highest weighted GPA you can get is a 4.6, but that’s impossible unless you somehow took all AP classes, which you can’t do. and the unweighted GPA just uses 4.0 for an A, 3.7 for an A-, and 3.3 or 3.4 for a B+

I don’t see anything wrong with your scores or GPA. I am glad our GPA calculations are not like your school’s, it is too confusing. Regular level classes are not weighted, honors are 1/2 weighted and AP and IB classes are weighted by one full point. I don’t think it really matters because the universities recalculate everyone’s GPA based on how they weight. Now at her school you can take AP as a sophomore, which she did and then in junior year she took one AP class and six IB classes.

Hopefully Clemson admissions are just backed-up. I would urge you to call them, but be very tactful and don’t give off the impression that you are “owed” the early acceptance. Now I am not saying you are giving that impression in this forum, because you definitely are not, I am just saying be real sweet to admissions. You know, “the don’t bit the hand that feeds you philosophy.”

Regarding my daughter, as a NMSF she has received numerous letters from different universities about the standard offer for NMF. She still has to finish her application to Duke and one more essay for the Clemson Calhoon Honors College, due this coming Tuesday. Clemson did offer the OOS tuition waiver, which comes in the form of a $14,000 scholarship. She is really hoping for a shot at the National Scholars Program. As for 1st choice, she is torn between Auburn and Clemson. She loved both schools, well actually she loved Auburn a little more and I have paid the tuition and housing deposit at Auburn because the NMF offer is very generous and is guaranteed. Now if she were offered the National Scholar’s scholarship at Clemson she would love to attend Clemson, but that is something we won’t know until February, if she is invited to compete.

I am sure you will get good news soon. Don’t fret.

Hello Clemsonfan2! It may simply be a matter of Clemson looking at the numbers of applicants’ designated major choice. That was one thing several people told us, including Clemson, regarding a certain limited number of spots within each major. We were advised not to select a really “popular” major, unless that was definitely what you intended to study. Make sense?
I agree with ProudMom’s advice, though. BTW, ProudMom, my son is also looking at Auburn and Clemson. We all loved both. Having never been there until recently, had no idea that Auburn was so cool! No doubt, they would treat our son very well and he would have some great opportunities there. One big difference between the two, however, is that Auburn is very clear and early in offering scholarship $.

Oops. To clarify, Clemson gave OOS waiver, but can’t give merit scholarship info until later. Hopefully, that won’t be in the spring, cuz that may be too late for our financial comfort level.

it is to my understanding that merit scholarship info will come out in December for most people

Hey Pierre–Thanks. My son’s letter from admissions says spring. Since you actually are a student there have you found the real-life situation to be in December for most prospective students? That would be fantastic. Admissions just told me last week that, due to the economy, additional merit scholarship money may not be available even to deserving students. :frowning: I can’t remember if he said last year or the prior year, that they didn’t/were unable to add any money to the OOS waiver for students. We’ll see. Whatever is meant to be will come through.

it may be the spring but the people that I know got scholarships in the winter…or maybe that was just the OOS tuition waiver, i can’t remember, I"ll see if I can get more details from some of them.

Alright thanks everyone for the help! Proud_mom, what would you recommend me asking when I call them?

I would suggest that you are honest, but very tactful. Let them know that you received a provisional acceptance letter in the spring (or whenever it was) and that you completed your application a while back. Do not tell them that you were expecting a letter of acceptance by now, instead tell them that you know of other students who have already received a letter of acceptance and ask if you should also expect to receive one. Make sure after they tell you whatever they tell you, to thank them for their time.

It could be as simple as your selected major or something with your application was logged in late. And maybe, feedback’s response from admissions last week may be the answer. Limited funds may have limited how many OSS scholarship offers and early admittances they could do; a limitation they may not have foreseen earlier this year. In your case I certainly hope not as you are obviously a very interested and well qualified applicant.

We are in the same situation. My daughter received a provisional acceptance on June 1 also. She submitted her application in early September and has not received an official acceptance. She is in the top 1% of her class. (We are in state.) I called admissions in October and was told that if the applicant is in line for a merit scholarship they would get their acceptance late October or early November.

We are still waiting and wondering too.
