Closed Major?

My daughter wants to apply to UCLA but I checked the UC website and it says to check for Closed Majors. For UCLA it says that for Freshman, Communication Studies is closed for the Fall of 2013. Does this mean don't even bother trying, your Major isn't available? We're out of state, so we already know her chances are slim, but if the application isn't even available yet, how does a Major close so soon?
Thanks!

The comm major is not open to freshmen applicants. You have to apply as an undeclared (or any other major) and then apply separately to the comm program upon completion of the prerequisites, which remains a competitive process.

Thank you for explaining. I appreciate it.

i would talk to the counselor in the Communications department. theyre usually pretty helpful! best of luck!

Yes apply as undeclared and complete some of the prereqs and then apply as a comm major! My friend who is currently a second year was recently accepted as a comm major in the summer. It’s highly competitive though and completely relies on your GPA. Make sure you have a high GPA around 3.8!

Thanks again! Chubby: when you mentioned GPA would that be her freshman year GPA at UCLA or her current HS GPA (3.8UW)?

Go to the comm dept website and email the undergrad advisor. They’re good about replying to emails.

It is college gpa from first 2 years of class. most people apply to comm as junior standing.
