Ucla majors

I am planning on applying to UCLA and wanted to apply as a COmmunications Major. It says major closed for freshman admissions, apply as junior only. Is the Communications Studies major only available to juniors and up? If so, what do i apply now? Another major or undeclared humanities/social science? I'm quite confused.

Pretty sure that if you’re selected you will be labeled as Pre-Comm Studies and will need to maintain a certain GPA to be competitive to get in as a junior.

You have to apply for admission to the communications major before your junior year. Unlike most other schools, the major here at UCLA is quite competitive so do be sure to have a backup major in case you don’t get in.

My daughter was in exactly your position when she was applying for UCLA. She is now a sophomore. She recently applied for the communications major and just found out last week that she was accepted. You apply to UCLA as “undeclared”. Then once you have completed 45 UCLA units you can apply for the comm. studies major. So you can apply at the start of your sophomore year as she did. Or apply in the spring of sophomore year or fall of junior year. Since she has now been admitted to the major she can start registering for some of those classes as early as next week for winter quarter. She is very happy about that. The major is very competative and selective. Acceptance is based on your UCLA GPA only. She worked very hard to have a 3.9 so she would have a good chance to get in and her hard work paid off.

So apply “undeclared” to the College of Letters and Sciences. Then take your GE classes with some comm studies lower division classes and have a back up major in mind in case you don’t get in or in case you change your mind. Actually you might be applying “undeclared” Humanities/Social science. Not sure which but basically it’s Undeclared.

thanks! should i apply undeclared humanities or undeclared social science?

Communication Studies is under the Social Sciences Division but I seem to remember my daughter applying under Humanities. Until recently she was considered Undeclared, Humanities. So either one is ok since you will be applying for comm studies. Or pick the one that your back-up major is under.
