S (incoming freshman) is going to be up in Evanston for the day, and D (also an incoming freshman, at a different school) and I are tagging along. We thought we would do some shopping-for-college for D. Any suggestions for good clothing stores in Evanston that have clothing that college students would wear? D is more on the preppy / sporty side but I'm trying to get her to expand her horizons a bit.

We've had luck finding some cute things at Coucou on Sherman (near the Starbucks) and I've been told to check out Chalk on Prairie Avenue. Any other suggestions? None of the chains please (like GAP or JCrew), I can find those anywhere -- more looking for things that are a bit more unique / college student.

Of course, I'll have to pick up another NU t-shirt / sweatshirt for her in honor of her brother :-)
Any other suggestions from either parents of girls or girls?

From a boyfriend of ~4 years:

Gap in town is a great store, and there’s an Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, and Levi’s store, but honestly, you’ll be best served taking the bus/driving to Old Orchard for the better selection (Forever XXI, Express, etc.)

I’m a fan of Asinamali’s stuff, but they’re pricier. Crossroads has a great reputation as a consignment shop.

HTH.

I have a Gap, Urban Outfitters, etc. at my local mall – and I’m very familiar with Old Orchard (having shopped there for years) and it doesn’t offer anything I can’t get at my local mall. I was really looking more for the boutiques / “one-off” stores such as Coucou, or whererever south-campus girls might go shopping when they want something new or when going to formals.

I see that Asinamali is right next to Coucou’s – didn’t know that. That’s more the type of thing I’m looking for. Ask your girlfriend for me :-)

She says Asinamali and the consignment shops might be the only ones near campus.

I’m not a huge clothes shopper, so I don’t know all the stores, but I recommend Crossroads Trading Co. It’s guaranteed to have stuff that college students wear, because college students can bring their clothing there.

There’s also a Francesca’s (sp?) nearby. I’m not sure if that’s a chain store or not, but I’ve gone there with a friend a couple times when she’s looking for something to wear on a date, so it has nice stuff, as well as more laid-back things.

I’ll post again if I can think of any more.
