would a suit come in handy freshman yr with greek events/formals/etc? do many kids bring suits or sport coats?

what does the average vanderbilt kid wear?- hollister, jcrew, etc...

Dude, it’s college. be yourself. There isn’t an average vanderbilt kid, so wear what you feel is you or what feels comfortable.

I’d bring a navy blazer and a charcoal gray suit at the least. Both are essentials for many times of the year. If you’re thinking of rushing, you really need a blazer, some white oxfords, and some good ties (preferably black and gold, Robert Talbott makes good ones, but there are plenty (BB, Hanauer, etc…)). I don’t think any young man should come to college without some semi-formal attire. I own a tux, but I don’t think many young men need one. I wore the tux less than ten times in college, all at formals where I was one of the best dressed guys. Anyway, bring suits and sport-coats.

When i visited vandy, i saw most guys on frat row either wearing ralph lauren or lacoste. Id stay away from american eagle, abercrombie and hollister

Hmmm, how do $2.50 target-bought t-shirts and $5-$10 cargo shorts sit with the Vandy crowd? Complete with extremely stylish thrift store purchased shoes and belt? ;D

On a serious note, will the above last me year round? As in, how cold do the winters get? Because where I live now, I wear something comparable all the time, but the temps rarely if ever dip below 40 (on those occasions, I throw on a second shirt, but I almost never have need for pants). Are there any people still walking around in “traditionally summer” clothing in the “dead” of winter?

"what does the average vanderbilt kid wear?- hollister, jcrew, etc… "

How about dressing how you feel like and quit worrying about others. Too many look-a-like robots running around as it is.

“As in, how cold do the winters get?”

Get down into the 20’s, usually hover around the 30’s to low 40’s.

“Are there any people still walking around in “traditionally summer” clothing in the “dead” of winter?”

Yes, all the time, it is rather ridiculous to hear them complain how cold it is when they are wearing shorts, sandals, and a hoodie. Women more so then men, women just need the attention to their legs to detract from their pudgy stomach.

wear whatever the heck you want! do you :)

sometimes there are big snows in Nashville, so bring shoes for bad weather when you have to cross campus…Nashville has four distinct seasons. Winter is real in a moderate sort of way…layers, wind protection in your outer layer is a plus

hey kfc do you go to Vandy?

1) the majority of girls don’t wear “shorts, sandals, and a hoodie” in the cold at vandy pretty pretty much…ever. they also don’t really show their legs “to distract from their pudgy stomach” really…at all, maybe also has something to do with the distinct lack of fat people at vandy. also, leggings have been “in” for like the past 3 years, usually with Ugg boots, at vandy and most schools like it.

i completely understand some people wanting to change their style before they get to college to fit in or whatever. so just a quick PSA to those people and the people graciously bestowing them with advice they themselves believe to be immaculate, this is why they say visiting helps more than talking to people on the internet who are always right.

that being said, if you want to “fit in” at vandy, and are a guy, you will want polo ralph lauren, brooks brothers, lacoste, j crew, and other classic brands. wearing abercrombie, american eagle, or the like will put you in bad taste. you will need a blazer, khakis, a few ties, some oxfords, and lots of polo shirts. you might need a suit, but probably not until senior year, maybe junior year, for on-campus interviews, and you absolutely will not need a tuxedo. you can always rent those if you end up joining a fraternity and go to 1-2 tux events a year.

if you are a girl, you will need lots of sundresses, and basically anything that is “in fashion”. doesn’t really apply to guys, the vandy male dresscode was probably the same 10 & 20 years ago as it is now, hence “classic” as a descriptor.

how do i know this? visiting many times, having many friends there, and the culture @ vandy being like a mix between duke & university of alabama…some SEC southern feel with some elite duke feel, minus a good bit of the “northern” school feeling you get a duke.

in summary, seriously, please, don’t give people bad advice. if they want to fit in, this is how. saying “just be yourself” then telling them how to look out of place doesn’t help them…

curious about the the $2.50 tshirt coupled with $5 cargo shorts. please report back!

if someone asks what typical students wear, just answer their question without a lecture on how to live your life. it is completely unproductive and annoying. get off your high horse.

i think that was really productive. you should try riding on high horses, much more enjoyable than shetland ponies, god they suck

whoistebow, i started typing before your post. i agree with you. i was talking to the people above you

oh, whoops. yeah, let’s show those whippersnappers who’s boss partner

The bookstore carries a small assortment of Vineyard Vines ties custom designed for Vanderbilt. I have seen male students wearing those frequently.

Excuse me, but if the logo on your shirt helps you fit in, you have bigger problems then fitting in. If the crowd of people think the logo on your shirt helps you fit in, you should ask yourself if you want to be a part of the crowd. I’ll step off my soapbox now.

GCN2, im going to take a wild guess and assume youre not in greek life?

because bruce obviously has the intent of rushing, so your lecture did not help at all.

First off, my comment was not directed at the OP. It was directed at the people listing specific brand names, which I find ridiculous.

And why do you assume I’m not in greek life? Because I suggest not fitting into a group based on logos? What does that say about YOUR perception of greek life? I didn’t mention greek life at all. There are people outside of greek life who judge you for what you wear.

Here’s my answer, so I can become a productive member of this thread.
Bring boots, it rains.

“hey kfc do you go to Vandy?”

No, let’s just say I use to “work” there for a few years and still in contact with many in the medical profession there.

You say this…
“the majority of girls don’t wear “shorts, sandals, and a hoodie” in the cold at vandy pretty pretty much…ever. they also don’t really show their legs “to distract from their pudgy stomach” really…at all, maybe also has something to do with the distinct lack of fat people at vandy. also, leggings have been “in” for like the past 3 years, usually with Ugg boots, at vandy and most schools like it.”

Then you say this…
“how do i know this? visiting many times, having many friends there, and the culture @ vandy being like a mix between duke & university of alabama…some SEC southern feel with some elite duke feel, minus a good bit of the “northern” school feeling you get a duke.”

But for some reason you imply you have some supreme knowledge over someone who has lived at worked there for a number of years.

I am not saying I am the supreme being of knowledge, but I am not condescending someone for their observation either.

At first I was going to change my style so I can fit in too! Then I realize that is not me and I just want to be comfortable going to class and learn as much as I can. PLUS im soooo sooo excited to be excepted to one of the best school in the US =D

im bringing sweats pants and pull over sweatshirts for winter and jeans a t-shirts for summer and maybe a few nice apparels for interviews like others had mentioned.

so really, rain boots? how bad does it really get over there?( i live in cali by the way) does those rain boots at target uncomfortable to walk in? do you think i would need a raincoat too? gosh I hate rain. sorry if I sound stupid, but does it snow there by any chance??

Good luck to others though! Get your education on whoo hooo! =p

I’m from a desert, so any number of rain was increase for me. It definitely rains enough to warrant boots and a coat, in my opinion. Any appreciable amount of snow is pretty rare though. During the winter we’ll get some flurries that stick around for awhile, though I wouldn’t consider the snow persistant.
