Clothing for Revisits at East Coast Schools? (Exeter, Andover, St. Paul's, Groton)

I am attending the spring revisits at Exeter, Andover, St. Paul’s, and Groton. However, the problem is that I have never experienced any “real” cold weather like they have in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Snow is a bit of a foreign concept. I have no idea what clothes, shoes, and other accessories would be weather appropriate, much less appropriate for these types of events. How formal is each one? What are the do’s and don’t’s of the dress codes? If anyone has gone, is going, or just has any advice, I would be very thankful. Also, any tips on dealing with the weather or any other matter would be appreciated.

My guess is you are female because you mentioned accessories?

They have the “what to wears” on the school website  My advice is to layer up! Have fun!

Yes, I am female @doschicos‌
@UIButton‌ Thank you! They are not very specific, however. I am looking more for what type of coats and how many layers, etc so as not to under-pack and freeze to death (:

Long sleeved shirt (or sweater with a cardigan), vest or smaller jacket, and big coat is good enough. It’s cold up there, but it’s not like Antarctica. It’s better to overdress in layers rather than underdress because you can always shed the layers. Good brands for jackets/coats are North Face, Eddie Bauer, and Patagonia. It’s snowy up there so either wear medium sized or tall boots (no Uggs! Go for rain boots or waterproof boots. Leather/rubber boots are fine too. Actually, any boot is fine as long as it doesn’t have fur on the outside.) The boots are for outside walking because you’ll be traveling around campus a lot. If it’s not snowy by the time you revisit, maybe some nice shoes, like flats or dress shoes are fine. If you’ll be inside for a long period of time (conference or meeting), pack a pair of flats or heels or dress shoes in a small tote or purse. Wear warm socks–not the short athletic ones, the longer type. Jeans/dress pants are fine. You may be cold so try wearing some tights underneath if you’re comfortable with that. Hats (or your coat hoodie) and scarves/gloves are optional. Dress via their dress code, so modestly, conservative, and appropriate.

Remember that the tables are turned now; the school is trying to court you! It’s not so critical whay u wear, but out of courtesy try to respect the school dress code.

There are many older threads on this topic…try “dress for revisits” in search tool.

C’mon. Do you live in the tropics and have never experienced winter?!?

Revisits are at the end of March/beginning of April. Unless there is a freak storm, I think reading a weather forecast and choosing the outerwear that you would wear in your hometown will be sufficient.

As for what to wear under your coat, as others have said you cannot go wrong by following the dress code. Each school’s website has plenty of pictures of how the students are dressed. Enjoy.

Some of these haven’t been updated in a while, but give you glimpse into what some kids wear…

Well, not exactly. But, to give you an idea, we did have a few 90F days this winter… @skieurope‌
Thank you! That’s what I was looking for. @thelittleswimmer‌
Oh, and thanks to everyone else for responding, too. (:

IT IS SO COLD RIGHT NOW. DO NOT LET THE TERM “SPRING” FOOL YOU. WE ARE LIVING IN ANOTHER ICE AGE.

I’m only being halfway facetious. But I’m planning on wearing boots with leggings, a skirt, and a sweater underneath a jacket, possibly a sweater if it’s ridiculously cold. Accessories? Maybe a bag for holding papers or a folder, but I hardly doubt it’s the occasion to get all gussied up in terms of accessories and whatnot. Just stay in dress code and stay warm!

Boots, leggings, skirl and sweater/jacket sound perfect. Keep jewelry to classic, no huge hoops or clanging bangles. Jeans not permitted at some schools. Enjoy the day!

@2Indecisive: You’re welcome! :slight_smile:

Make sure that if you’re planning on wearing a dress/skirt, wear leggings, not tights! You’ll freeze your legs right off if you wear tights, since they’re so thin! (Unfortunately, I made this mistake. :P)

Suggested Accessories = Muffler/Scarf, Gloves, Umbrella

In January last year, we had interview trips during a snow storm. I expected Spring (like flowers!) for the revisit day. Last March in New Hampshire there was snow on the ground and we got freezing rain.

If you’ll be in New England, don’t plan too much until you can check the weather a couple days ahead of time. Weather this time of year can be very erratic ranging from a very wintery 20s and 30s to a more spring-like 60s. Layering is always good advice.

Yes, this is New England, and it gets crazy. But, it’s March 24th - revisits are in the next few weeks. Most (I said most) of the snow is melted (but there is still snow, and yes, it can and very well may snow in April), and it will start to warm up. That said, the first week of April, the temperature will probably vary quite a bit - maybe below 32, maybe 60 or 70… so I would do as the others have said - check the forecast closer to the revisit day, and then pack accordingly, but just keep clothes for warm and cold.

But, yeah, don’t expect on it being 90 up here B-)

It was 15 degrees at Andover today… Dress comfortably with an eye to any official dress code, and wear a jacket but not necessarily a parka, and wear shoes that aren’t super slippery in snow/ice. Other than that, enjoy the experience.
