I've heard of professional schools having a dress code. I just really wish that some people would put more effort into the things they wear.

"I've heard from my friends at northeastern rural colleges that the official girls' college uniform consists of Ugg boots, black leggings, hooded Northface jacket, and Vera Bradley purse."
That sounds like what the typical Michigan girl wears. It's hideous.

Just wear what you want. I go from formal to sloppy from day to day, depending on how much time I have and my mood.
There's always colleges like Vanderbilt and southern private schools of the like (these are the types of schools most of my high school class went to) that have a big sun dress and designer sunglasses stereotype. Many of my friends at those types of schools and the SEC also dress up for football games. I don't think it's something absolutely everyone does, though.

yep that characterization is pretty much what every girl at most schools wear. except NYU, that person was right in saying they are very fashion conscious and you get alot of the the "artsy" kids there too. when my two friends from NYU came to BC to visit they were like wow.. everyones wearing either BC gear, a northface, or uggs and yep thats true.

dress how you want in college. its too much of a hassle to get dressed up for one class just look presetable and decent. beginning and end of the year is when people look nicest because of warm weather. but even then its just girls in sundresses and guys in shorts and polos.

once you get older and do professional presentations you might have to dress up occationally.

just shop like youre spending another year in HS and pick up at least 4 pairs of sweatpants if you dont have any. your style will change as you grow and leave your hometown and experience all different types of styles and people. ive become less "beachy" and more just generic "cute" girl stuff. not really going too preppy (yet) thou. jcrew just seems too rediculously expensive to me

Don't forget the warm weather states. People in the Alabama definitely don't wear leggings or Uggs (obviously). Honestly, the way they dressed in UMichigan was so incredibly different from how I was used to people dressing in Alabama, both on the pre-college and college levels. I prefer stores like J. Crew, Banana Republic, and the less expensive versions of them because they tend to have pretty clothes...not clothes that fall victim to whatever trends LA is putting out.
Okay, it's late...I get cranky when I'm late...not going to start a rant about...clothing styles...

At my school, most older students can tell a frosh a mile away because they always dress so nice on the first day of school (or few weeks lol). Comfort clothes are pretty much dominate the school day, and anything you wear afterwards are usually entirely up to your own tastes. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you know you'll be going to a school with a dress code or something.

But make sure you have a least one pair of nice clothes, you never know when you might need to look your best (internship interview, scholarship interview, etc.).

Oh I forgot to mention in my post that evening dresses is very important if you are a girl. I didn't own any coming to college; after my freshman and sophomore years I probably own 50. College girls tend to get VERY dressed up even for somewhat casual parties.

Wow, nyuwishabee, we must live in completely different cultures! I don't think I've ever seen anyone wearing Uggs, leggings, and hooded jackets, and I don't even know what a Vera Bradley purse is. I don't own any of those things; they aren't at all fashionable here. And girls here wear casual attire for casual parties, not evening dresses. So different!

Wow what do people wear were you live? I usually just throw on whatever for class and don't even shower until I'm getting ready to go out at night lol.

What kind of clothes do most people wear in college, is there a uniform, would it seem odd if you wore a smart suit every day?

Don't be that guy. I'm not saying he doesn't exist but don't be him. It's gonna put your social life 6 feet under before you even get a chance to make a first impression.

anything from pyjamas (those who rolled out of bed at 8:25 for an 8:30 class) to suits (those who will roll out of an 11:30 class for an 11:45 interview)

What type of sweats are you meaning? Like the kind that are all scrunchy at the bottom or the ones like normal type pants? Are you talking about getting the cheap 5/$15 dollar ones or like name brand (PINK, Hollister, etc)?

Jeans are the primary bottoms here, not leggings or sweats (I would never wear sweats outside of the gym, personally). Sandals, flip-flops, sneakers, and leather boots in the winter are common footwear (and those hideous crocs, unfortunately). Any kind of top is worn here.

I must admit I usually wear black leggings as pants. I usually wear a hoodie, like a Primp hoodie or my school's logo sweatshirt. But I really do not care at all how I look in a lecture of 200-700 random people. I don't really talk to anyone in my classes, so why would I care?

Nighttime dressing is where it gets fun. I go to shopbop.com or Bebe for most of my dresses. I buy cheap shoes from places like Ross (Dress for Less haha), Charlotte Rousse or Forever 21. I buy cheap jewelry too...usually from Chinatown/Claire's/Duane Reade ahah.

For the love of all that is holy, please do not be the kid who dresses up for class. If you're sitting there in a "smart suit" when everyone else has literally just rolled out of bed, still wearing PJs...let's just say you won't win points with anyone, including the professor. You'll just look like an over-eager freshman! (This all, of course, does not apply if you go to a school like PHC where they require you to dress business casual for class.) If there's no "dress code" at school, stick with uber-casual!

Laura, I'm from Huntsville and discovered why people wear Crocs right before I left for the University of Michigan, where they, of course, wear Uggs. Both brands are hideous and yet comfortable and weather-appropriate.

What's the clothes scene like at Brown?

You know, am I going to be looked oddly at considering 60+% of my clothes look somewhat formal :S well...maybe not that, but they are all fairly nice.

What's interesting though, is the average cost of every shirt in my closet is ~$5 to $10. (My mom is huge on the sales >_< ).

EDIT: It's mainly all my sweaters that have the more formal look.

OKgirl.. not necessarily ones from PINK/hollister but im not gonna lie i have 2 pairs from each. i have those, ones that used to be "all scrunchy at the bottom" that say EAGLES but i cut this elastic to make them wide bottoms. and then another royal blue normal pair with cut elastic from HS powderpuff. then just like two pairs of plain black strechy bell bottom ones.

and i love my uggs. keep my feet so toasty warm in the freezing boston winters. but i just dont understand crocs. theyre not comfortable, ugly, and they make your feet smell.

honestly at BC i would say on any given day about 50% of girls are wearing jeans and the otehr 50% are wearing sweats or black leggings as pants. guys either jeans and a hoodie and alot of sweats with hoodies. athletes are never seen wearing anything but sweats except for party nights

It kind of all depends on where you come from. People from downstate New York are very stylish if you will(a lot of the time they look ridiculous though). Most of the rural places have a bit more diversity as strange as it sounds.

I usually wear t-shirts and jeans. I had a girl at my school tell me that she thought it was disgusting to just wear a t-shirt as a top, and that she could never do that. :)
