Club activities

Hey guys, I'm the secretary of my school's Pre-Med Club. The club president and I are looking for some new activities that we can do this school year. It should be hands-on and interesting, but not too expensive. We have some money we can use but it's not a lot. There are about 25 club members and all of them have background knowledge on bio, if that helps.

Thank you and we appreciate it!

Depends where you live. My school does not have a pre-med club (I wish, but I am one of only a handful who wants to go into medicine at my school), but I know of various things from helping teachers/being in programs…

Personally I have observed open-heart surgery twice, that was a ton of fun (but completely one of those things where you have to live in the right city), you should contact a local hospital or lab assuming you do not live in a city with a surgery observation program (you still might be able to meet with somebody or something along those lines). You could also go to science lectures (again depends where you live, you need to be near a good university with a strong science program). If you wanted something a little bit more unusual you could do an art class that focusses on anatomy and proportion (personally I love doing art with a science theme/it gives you a new appreciation). Hope this helps!

I don’t know if this is feasible at all for your school, but a similar club at my school, HOSA (Health Occupations uhhh something something) helps organize a school-wide blood drive twice a year in coordination with the Red Cross. A lot of juniors and seniors usually donate. Much of it is organizational, but it definitely provides a firsthand observation of the procedures involved in blood donation, the biological statistics, etc. I’m not sure about the money, but if anything, I think my school just supplies the food for donors, like pizza or something, and getting food donated for a good cause is never too difficult. Maybe your club could be involved in some project along these lines!
