Clubs at Cal

Hello,

There aren't many threads about the student organizations at Cal so I thought I'd start one.

I checked the website; I'm not sure how updated the club's list is, but from what I read, none of the clubs seem very stimulating if your not into poetry slams or raising awareness for various "underrepresented" voices on campus. (This is an intended generalization.)

Some of my friends go to schools that include clubs such as The Motorized Couch Collective, The Surrealist Training Circus, and one club whose mission is to "turn anything edible into something smokeable." Obviously, these clubs aren't dedicated to changing the world or doing anything serious for that matter, but they do serve a social purpose. I was wondering- Are there any cool clubs at Berkeley?

(Personally speaking, I am an artistic person with a very peculiar sense of humor and sometimes an attention whore. Sorry if this doesn't help much.)

IMO, not really. There are too many clubs that are pure party clubs and throw social events all the time.

Consider Habitat for Humanity, Amnesty International, Model UN, STELA, CALPIRG, and SLC.

There are a lot more career/academic clubs now because everyone want something "respectable" to put down on resumes and apps.

That said, the website isn't too helpful. Go onto facebook, join the berkeley network, and start looking up groups as well as events (it's convenient to use the calendar feature for this one). You can find more specific clubs, or at least people, you might be interested in.

dood you can find anything around here, u can start your own....all though, that edible-smokeable club is awesome.

one thing that's weird is that there's no norml chapter on campus, or any sort of cannabis appreciation club, but that would be probably the biggest club on campus.

I have to believe even if there isn't a cannabis appreciation club now, that was not always the case. . . .

Legit. Somewhat lame, but legit.

What do all the creative / ecclectic minds do at Cal, and where can I find them? (This isn't to imply that I am a radical noncomformist by any means, but I have found over the course of my gap year that it is really important to me personally to have a social life far removed from the traditional college experience.)

I would rather avoid the traditional college subcultures as well (such as the hippy and stoner crowds) but I suppose those are better than the Greek scene.

If you think about it, the college admissions process usually weeds out these types of people. Straight A's, chess club presidents, high performing athletes...hallmarks of creativity and innovation? I don't think so :p

uh no... there's tons of creative/ecclectic minds, i'd say take a look @ the co-ops. but if you're social, you'll find your people.

The name's escaping me right now, but I remember reading in the Daily Cal my freshman year about a club founded by a grad student that discusses philosophical matters.

Alternatively, for creativity, you can join publications like Squelch and Daily Cal.

I'm seriously considering joining the Squelch guys. Given its popularity on campus, are they really in need of more people? I'm a pretty good cartoonist. (I'm not sure if anyone who regularly posts on this website contributes to the Squelch.)

UCBHI- Funny, I believe the same thing about college admissions. (It's certainly evident at some schools, though California has a fairly sizeable crowd of intellectual / artistic students. I don't think it's in the best interest of the UC System to reject ALL of them. [Just most of them.]) That said, Berkeley is enormous; I'm sure they're around.

They always need more people.

There are tons of different clubs with different dynamics. Additionally, you could always start your own.
