Clubs/Student Organizations

I don't plan on going Greek, but I'd still like to stay connected with the student body, especially through clubs. So, excluding fraternities and sororities, what are some of the popular clubs at UNC?

Young Democrats is the largest student organization with over 600 dues-paying members. Some other popular clubs include Habitat for Humanity, Nourish International, various “diversity” clubs like MSA (Muslim Student Assoc.), Sangam (South-Asian interest), and ASA (Asian Student Assoc.), Dance Marathon, Carolina Fever, Student Government, FLO (Fair Local & Organic Foods), Blank Canvas (a dance collective), etc. etc.

One of my favorite things about Carolina is that there’s seriously something for EVERYONE to get involved with, no matter their interests. There’s a big event during Week of Welcome every year called FallFest, where all the clubs set up booths on South Road to recruit new members. You get a ton of free food and other free stuff, see really awesome performances and sign up for e-mail lists for whatever organizations you’re interested in.

The only problem with fall fest is that you can’t find all the clubs you are looking for. It is a whole lot of fun though.

I think actually they’re going to try to put together a map of all the booths this year so the festival’s easier to navigate!

If you’re interested in service we’ve all got the Campus Y, which is a huge umbrella service group with a bunch of committees. This year I missed working with children so I just searched their website and found the perfect program for me. It is absolutely incredible to me how active and diverse the clubs at UNC are - I think it’s one of our strongest points.

Don’t forget about club sports too. We have everything from soccer to lacrosse to handball to underwater hockey (I’m not kidding)
