Clubs

I think quite a few of the athletes are nervous about joining clubs; I know my one son is - the other not so much. They are concerned about their ability to handle practice, travel, tournaments, etc. with academics and any other responsibilities which will crop up. I think four clubs sounds like too many MissMuff, unless clubs there aren't what I am thinking clubs were like when I was in civ college (before time began). Is there any stigma attached to joining, then quitting a club?

i originally put 3, then i was like, hmm...i can't handle 4 but maybe some people can.

i think a lot of people start clubs then decide they can't handle them. they also "test drive" and find which ones they like best. at least, i know of a few people doing that. but clubs are fun

i think i signed up for 6 or 7, tested them, and have stuck with 2 strongly. it rly depends on the club and the committment time to it

thanks for the info on clubs. my son wants the SABRE and some small arms club. sorry he does not give me a lot of info so I have to resort to looking stupid to the whole world to find my answers
thanks much
AF Pride

AF Pride - Don't be concerned at all in asking questions here because your cadet doesn't talk to you much. You are not alone.

These sons and daughters have a lot on their minds, are unsure of their place at AFA at this point in time, are naturally quiet, not good conversationalists, or are incessant talkers, are holding all the good stuff to themselves to spill the beans Parent's Weekend...........get my point? Just as they did before AFA, they continue to be a school full of differing personalities, cadets with new challenges, new priorities, etc.

We all experience different responses from our cadets. And, those responses from our own cadet can be familiar to us one day and be from the "who are you?" alien cadet the next time we speak.

We will all do what we can to help you out if possible. Join the club!

i think we know our place at the academy at this point ;)

School and other things keep us busy though, I don't talk much with my parents now a days. But you're right, Parent's weekend will be the time to spill all.

hehe, and i'm the one who talks incessantly

sabre takes up a loooooooooot of time from what i've heard.

Cad - no offense meant that you, or anyone else, wasn't sure of what in the world you were doing. If that's what you thought I meant, my bad!

In the interest of trying not to be long winded, I often cut my thoughts short. I can see how what I posted did not sound like what I intended. My intent was to reference "place" as in how to make it all work in 24 hours, did I chose the right academic courses, what about those clubs, can I fit in all the activities, get my eight hours of homework done in the four I have, do I have time to connect to home, do I have time to answer all the questions my parents have, am I sure I am making it all work together - that kind of thing. :)

Thanks BJ10Mom and MissMuff. I really appreciate the help here. Hopefully we will get more information PW. Until then if you dont mind talking to the dumb I will probably bug you for needed information
thanks again

BJ10MOM knows what she's talking about, she's been a cadet mommy for over 2 years now! Very true. It can take some time to discover where in the Wing you will fit in. Freshman year is not the best time to find out due to the restricting nature of life. But once March hits and you have the chance to branch out, meet more people, try new things, then your place really starts to shine through. My strengths and interests really couldn't be used or expanded on until I joined my new squad and became an upperclassmen. I'm sure people like redhead and PETKO can say the same now! (however, redhead was able to find her place pretty early in the game!).

For me, I'm tested some of the clubs, but I've found the most fun in Swing and Blues dancing clubs (I'm sure I've said that a bazillion times here!) I enjoyed Ski club the last two years, not having a car an all. That's all I've had the time for now and all I'm willing to take the time to pursue!

The opportunities abound here!

I'm definitely one of those quiet cadets in regards to talking with my family.

I think part of it stems from the awkwardness of trying to communicate what it is like to live a VERY different lifestyle from my parents.

BTW, Small arms club meeting tonight at 1910 in D1

Can someone enlighten me on Mountaineering club? That's one that Buckaroo has joined but no explanation came with the announcement.

AFPride - Don't worry about it. You'll find that is why everyone is here and as a general rule treat each other well. No dumb questions really. I still have questions and I served in the AF for 21 years, have been to USAFA several times, and have a very large extended military family.

Like Hornet said recognition really does change things. Potter was afraid to cross the hall as a Doolie and now is streching her wings. Some cadets are bolder (redhead, missmuff, Petko,...) but it will all come with time.

Some cadets communicate better, but eventually you will learn what you need to get through.

Txtwinmom I believe mountaineering is hiking and some serious climbing. They have some serious mountains there too. As a kid I can remember going up to pikes peak in a car, but shudder to thinnk what climbing it on foot would be like.

Try running to the top...

no thank you

Speaking of which, I'd like to say congrats to my squadmate and friend ZMAN, who completed the Pikes Peak Ascent in 3:48:13 this weekend! He even beat our AOC, who's in mind-bogglingly good shape, up the mountain by seven minutes. Insane!

Must be nice having a squadmate that makes a woglet look sane. I'm short of breath just thinking about it.

Sabre is out there while we have Honor Guard. They come out pretty much the same time we do (1645) and they end with a late dinner (~1830 ending), so its about two hours a day every day.

Hornet I heard you are running flutter kicks tomorrow morning. I will see you there, Tiger Ten is pumped ;)

HuZzAh! :) Flutter away my friends!
